The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the boy was shot when his father’s handgun went off as the man got into the truck while holding the gun.

Police say 44-year-old Joseph V. Loughrey told them he had emptied the magazine but didn’t realize a bullet was still in the chamber.

I heard of this incident and it made me more angry than anything else. I feel for the family but this should never (and need not ever) happen. In my state a couple of years ago, a 9 year old boy shot himself in front of his father and the range officer with an Uzi at a sanctioned event (run by the local chief of police). Why is a 9-year old handling an Uzi!!? Absolutely tragic. "Treat every gun as if it is loaded" is the first in the dictum of safe firearms handling. I'm not a gun control advocate by any mean, but let's face it, some people have no business owning a firearm. I've seen so much clueless, lazy, dangerous, and stupid behavior at ranges, while hunting, and just when people want to show me their latest "toy" that it's staggering. We're in a battle with this current administration and many regular citizens to preserve our second amendment rights, we don't need people behaving so irresponsibly. My condolences go out to this family, they've experienced a loss that is worse than any I can possibly imagine. But there must be a way without adding tons of legislation, to ensure that people who buy guns have some clue as to what they are doing.

As the father of a 7 year old, I'm a little numb with this one. These little pieces of metal are made to kill people...you have to respect them or something tragic is going to happen.

I've read a few different accounts now, can't shake this boy from my mind. Like someone else said, one of my boys is that age... I read one account he was backing out, but have also seen the following:

Getting into the truck while holding the gun seems to make the most sense. Maybe carrying it with his finger on the trigger, he thought it was empty. The safety rules really don't seem that hard...

And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers, in harmony with God's own will.

I agree with Brady. My heart breaks for the family. I will be praying for God to heal the hearts of this hurting family. I will be asking that the mother be able to forgive her husband, and the father be able to forgive himself.

If the barrel is pointed at something you would not want destroyed - major fail. The safety rules are there for a reason and, if they are ALL followed, this should never happen. If just ONE of the rules are not followed, tragedy can result. Complacency kills.

I wouldn't like to argue either. I regret bringing it up. Fwiw, I read the verses. I've read the bible, cover to cover, a dozen times. But that's not the point. I get sensitive at the notion that god is in control or we should pray to him for comfort at times like this. We buried my sister 7 years ago on this very day. I've heard all about the "god of comfort". I used to preach it myself. But I can't resolve an almighty, omnipotent omniscient god who is "love" allowing and not preventing awful things like this. It's so heartbreaking. So my apologies. I don't want to hijack a thread or offend. I just have to swallow some bile when I hear about god's hand or comfort in matters like this. But I think we're all in agreement that no matter what we believe, our heart breaks for that boy, his father and the family. So sad.
