Great, let's demonize one of the victims.

It is unfortunate she did not keep her firearms secured.

"But if they don't exist, how can a man see them?"
"You may think I'm pompous, but actually I'm pedantic... let me explain the difference."
"Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don't ever apologize for anything."
Par for the course considering it is a UK “newspaper”. Us bloodthirsty crazy yanks are expected to be violent.
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.
"Don't forget, incoming fire has the right of way."
They are painting her as a 'Gun nut'.
"a gun-hoarding survivalist who was stockpiling weapons in preparation for an economic collapse"

You would think givin the condition of her son they would be secure....
If as reported so far ... In one aspect, she apparently didn't prep nearly well enough: storing her unused weapons in a safe, to keep them out of the hands of criminals.
If she new it, yes. From many of the reports so far (though, we know how accurate many of those have been), it seems the kid was somewhat of a 'known' quantity. Not the most stable of sorts, apparently ... bright, loner, angry, disconnected from family, etc.
Ah, well. What might have been.
One of the things very likely to come out of all this: a heavy push to legally require formal, effective storage of weapons when they're not otherwise in active use (being carried on the person, being cleaned, being taken out to the range, etc).
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

I have pretty much the same guns she had and I never give doomsday a second thought.
The number of lives saved due to responsible gun owners actually having their weapons secure as an every day practice will never become news.

I find it odd that this is only in the UK press, nothing in the US press. You would think that if they had something to advance their gun control agenda the media would be blasting it from the rooftops...
I'd rather be lucky than good any day
There's nothing that will change someone's moral outlook quicker than cash in large sums.
Majority rule only works if you're also considering individual rights. Because you can't have five wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for supper.

Or was she simply someone who chose to own firearms as a means of self-defence, like many of us.

I think they were broadly and loosely applying a general term. Having three firearms hardly qualifies one as a prepper. Does she have an underground bunker stocked with months of supplies, a cache of gold coins just in case. Come on, if you're gonna prep--prep!
I own more than 3 guns, do have a small supply of ammo, and enough food on hand to survive a couple of weeks, but I'd hardly describe myself as a prepper. But you go ahead and feast on the media feeding frenzy if you choose.
