    Slug Sights? Red Dot Perhaps?

    Hello Gents,

My home defense shotgun is a Mossberg 500a. It is cylinder bore and has a bead sight.

I keep it loaded with 00 buck but have slugs for it as well. Growing up in a shotgun-only-for-deer state I have come to expect rifle-like precision from my slugs. Every slug gun I've had I've made to shoot like a Winny 94 at 100yds. That, to me, is acceptable accuracy. Usually it only takes a 'scope or rifle sights and slugs the gun likes.

However, I seem to be having trouble with finding a rifle-sighted barrel for this shotgun due to the increased magazine length.

I was therefore thinking about a red dot sight and a quick mount from a reputable manufacturer as I don't trust Al that's been drilled and tapped - Mossy receivers are Al.

However, for self defense situations I'm not sure how I feel about having to turn a knob to get a sighting poing. I figure I could just look through the thing without it being on for buckshot as cylinder bore will spread it out quickly, but if I have to take a quick slug shot... well, you see my dilemma?

Is there anyone out there experienced with the red dot sight on shotguns, and what is your opinion on using it on a defensive weapon?

    Thanks,

    Josh <><

while red dots are possible, my girlfriend has a dot on her hunting gun, irons will be much more durable. you could always find a gunsmith and install irons. My house gun has a red dot, but the irons are always there too.

    Thank you.

I'm actually looking for a cheap investment because college is a sponge, and I was figuring with the quick change scope mount I could still see under it and get the bead.
