    Public Gun Ranges After Christmas

Just curious what your personal rules are about public gun ranges after Christmas. My personal rule is that I don't go to public ranges between Christmas and New Year at all and then not on weekends in January. Not only are the lines too long, there are just too many untrained people wandering around pointing guns, sometimes loaded guns, in all directions. I do go to the gun club range during that time as people who belong to the club generally have a clue and that range has a full time RSO who does a good job.

    What is your rule?

I haven't been to a public range in years. I live in a rural area, and have a pistol range in my back yard. I also own a farm about twenty minutes from where I live, and I have up to a thousand-yard range there.

    Public Gun Ranges After Christmas

I try to avoid public ranges between Jan 1 and Dec 31. Just because of all the idiots out there.
God invented cops so that firemen could have heroes too!

Hmm. if I was familiar with ya'lls ranges I might feel the same way.

However ... I only shoot at a public (SCDNR) range. I drive thirty minutes to get there. The RO is not only very knowledgeable
but very helpful with every first time visitor and without being totally obnoxious enforces the rules. Everyone must sign in and
out so a first timer is easily recognized. He personally escorts them to the firing line and reviews the rules. He doesn't hesitate
to call on a "regular" to help out with a "newbie" to make sure they follow the safety rules.

I get your drift about between Christmas and New Years but I've seen so many new gun owners showing up this past year that
I just can't imagine that number being higher on any given day during the Christmas holidays. On our range Wednesday is the only
day available for handguns, they shut down the 100 yard rifle range for us guys to move closer to the berm, roughly 15 yards. No
one deviates from that distance !

To label all public ranges as undesirable due to all the "idiots" out there ... several things ... were you always perfect ?, you never made
a mistake ? and where were you when the idiot needed guidance ??? Oh and let me add that our RO assists every body not just newbies.
ha ha as a side note, you don't want to compete with him he's taken one of my pistols for the first time and skipped a lil stick up the berm.
You should see what he does with his own !

Okay ... I've cooled off ... ya'll have a very Merry Christmas and I can't wait till our range reopens on Jan. 2nd. Maybe I'll get the opportunity
to help someone learn how to safely handle and shoot a firearm.

The gun range where I live doesn't tolerate idiots. The owners in a heart beat will toss you out as fast as you do something stupid. I like that and thats the way it should be and no one gets hurt.

If one doesn't know to keep their gun at target tray, pointed down range at ALL times than one needs to be tossed out. No IF ands or BUTS!

I too have a little range on my property (50 yards) with a real nice backstop, and it's about 200 yards from my back door. Because I'm lazy I'll usually load all my "stuff" on our golf cart at the back door and ride over to shoot. Mostly use it for pistols, but can sight a rifle in, when need be.

We have a real nice private gun club, that's about 6 miles or so away, and I'll visit it sometimes with a member, but probably won't over the holidays. Deer rifles are already sighted in, so really no reason.

    Merry Christmas Ya'll. Be safe.

Are you open to adopting a middle aged (okay, okay, 55yr old), slightly overweight (okay, okay, slightly heavy-set), congenial (okay, sometimes slightly grumpy) son to shoot with?

If you are ok with calling a similarly-featured guy a year older than you "dad".

My options are public range or none at all. But I'm in no hurry to go after Christmas. Too busy.

I am in the same boat ... Which is why I don't go to the range that much... The other reason is $$$$

As long as this does not mimic anything that might bring up images of William Tell then I'm up for it....

I have a lot of family in the Springfield area, too.

This is something I hadn't thought about. Now that the seeds are planted I think I'll stay home for awhile & save on ammo & range fees. I'm retired & can go anytime during week days when everyone but us old farts are at work.
