"A first rate man with a third rate gun is far better than the other way around". The gun is a tool, you are the craftsman that makes it work. There are those who say "if I had to do it, I could" yet they never go out and train to do it. Don't let stupid be your mindset. Harryball 2013

bmcgilvrays's list is essentially mine, except I would add a generic "bolt-action milsurp rifle" to the list.
Notice how pretty much every category of modern gun is represented in that list with an icon of the type? Get ten experienced "gunnies" in a room and ask them to call out the first gun that comes to mind when you name a category. Bolt-action rifle? Model 70. Single action revolver? Colt Single Action Army. Side-by-side shotgun? Parker. Lever-action rifle? Winchester 94. And on it goes... a well-considered list!

I think everybody (who can afford it of course) should own one really fine gun of some kind- an English Side By, a truly fine custom bolt rifle, and hand-tuned top drawer 1911, whatever. There is something very special about such guns- you use them and feel connected to the incredible skill and pride of the men who built them. I have an English shotgun, made by Scott circa 1890, a sidelock with engraving of that time, french walnut, etc. It is not a practical weapon (for example, it has 2.5 inch British chambers) but my- hunting birds with it is wonderful. It knocked down its first game bird when Victoria was queen of England. What incredible skill those workman had. Just unbelievable.
Six for sure...Uh, I mean Five. Five for sure..

Your caliber and particular platform and brand are your choice but everyone and I mean EVERYONE needs a fighting rifle. We all have pistols of whatever flavor and will work for there intended purpose but the rifle that can put rounds down range with enough volume to make a difference when it counts is heavily under rated.

I don't think you peasants should be allowed to own any guns. Guns should be reserved for the ruling elite. Oh wait, wrong forum.
How about: a Remington 870 with two barrels: 18.5" tactical and 28" bird barrel

Seeing the vanishing act that AR type rifles are displaying, it seems like your bet on a resurgence of lever action rifles is a slam dunk!

Any good 1911 in .45. Would love to have a Colt Python. Not enough made for everyone to have one. If I ever win the lottery, I might have two of them.
