    What should I do?

Since the current political climate is very unhealthy in terms of searching for any kind of AR-15, and any semi-automatic rifle for that matter, I am curious to hear some opinions on what someone who would REALLY like an AR-15 platform should do.

Search for a mini-14 and settle, if I can even find one?

    Look for an SKS?

I say the SKS is your best bet right now. Whether you'll be able to get an AR later or not, the SKS is an excellent rifle and I think you'll like it.

Write your senators and reps in your state, as well as anyone else in political office. That sounds like the best course of action.

I believe the mini 14 is on the chopping block as well isn't it???

Continue your AR search while writing your emails :)

A lever gun can still be had for less than $500, and the ammo is available. Is an AR really worth 3-5 X as much as a lever gun? I don't think so.

I like my Mini 14 a lot, but if I could only have one center fire rifle, it would be my Marlin 336. Hard hitting .30-30 caliber, 6+1 capacity, can be topped off on the fly, plenty accurate, easily takes a scope, fires almost as quickly as a semi auto, reasonably priced...and does not offend the sheep. Works for me.

Buy something else, and trade for an AR later on. FAL or PTR-91 would be a straight across trade in most cases, AK-47 or AK-74 you'd be chipping in cash, M1A you'd get paid for the trade. There are plenty of options. I personally wouldn't go with the SKS. In any case you'll be needing mags and ammo, which are hard to come by for anything at the moment. Where in WA are you? PM if you'd like.

Build one starting with an 80% complete AR lower that you finish yourself.

Get yourself a good 'ole 30-30 and call it good...get a ton of ammo with the savings, too!

As recently as last week, I found a Stainless Mini-14 for $750.00. Didn't buy it.

I'm looking at getting a lever action in .357 Mag. That way I can use the same ammo in it and my revolver. With practice a lever action can be fired very quickly.
