I wonder how many more times we'll be saying this in the next 4 years? A lot, I think. If the administration starts us down this slope we may be shocked at what we can't get by 2016.

Taking the cynical view: because making money off the backs of dead school children makes a much "better" story to tell, when attacking the industry because of its products. Murderers don't get much mileage, politically, but "deep-pockets" manufacturers that can be tied to murderers is another story altogether.

According to the U.S. Census' labor/economic statistics by industry, the small arms (guns) industry and the ammunition industry total about ~15K jobs and ~$4.5B sales (as of 2007). Not exactly a huge fraction of the economy. That represents about the same as General Motors' sales dipping 3% and employment being trimmed 5.8% in a year (2007), and that would require entire small-arms and ammo markets drying up completely. Not likely, short of evaporation of planet Earth.

Data: U.S. Census (via "FactFinder" tool), Manufacturing: Summary Series: General Summary: Detailed Statistics by Subsectors and Industries: 2007 --

    NAICS 332994, Small Arms Mfg, 10289 staff, $550M payroll, $299M payroll/production, $988.2M matls cost, $2.74B shipments, $590M inventories.

    NAICS 332993, Ammunition Mfg, 5442 staff, $253M payroll, $118M payroll/production, $605M matls cost, $1.74B shipments, $182M inventories.

Ok, but that's only two segments of the firearms related industry, not including apparel, accessories, such as rifle and handgun stocks, custom grips, magazines, sights, optics, gun cases, cleaning accessories, lathes, milling machines, CNC machines, lubricants for those machines etc., FedEx UPS, USPS, on and on it goes. There is much, much more to the firearms industry than guns and ammo, but nobody seems to give it any thought whatsoever.

So that the state of Colorado gets sales tax from it? Should have moved, then shipped, to prevent the state from cashing in...

My LGS has them for $29 for .223, they've never been low on them. One thing that does suck about this magazine madness is that Magpul has been focusing mostly on that and not their other products (I don't blame them). Took me a month to score a Magpul UBR in black and last I checked the store doesn't plan on receiving anymore for a while. Saw one on eBay going for $490 a few weeks ago, it's about $265 new.
