De-cockers don't make me nervous at all. Dropping the hammer on a single-action with a grip safety, otoh, is something I never do.Quote:

Doing it by hand with your thumb? Dumb plan. There is no reason to carry a gun hammer down on a loaded chamber unless that gun is designed with a de-cocker.
I have heard of guns "going off" as you put it - when the thumb slips off the hammer while the trigger is being pulled. That is what we call a Negligent Discharge, i.e. shooting the gun at the wrong time.

There are safe ways to decock a firearm, even a single action revolver. Decocking levers are mechanical devices and can fail,just like safties. If you follow the safety rules(always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction) you should be ok. I have never heard of a gun with a decocker going off when decocked but that doesn't mean it can't happen. When in doubt, always err on the side of caution and safety. There are no mulligans with an AD.
I keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction when de-cocking.
My one and only negligent discharge was while uncocking my .30-30. I will still uncock a hammer, I'm a lot more cautious while doing so. Decockers are no issue.
Always makes me nervous to use the decocker on my Valter P99. Don't know why.
My Sig P232 SA/DA has a decocker. I've never heard of a problem with them but I always point the gun in a safe direction (most likely the ground) when decocking. As already mentioned, any mechanical device can fail.
I ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, ALWAYS!

I've decocked my Sig P225 with a round chambered hundreds of times. Not the least bit concerned about it.
Yeah I used to carry one and honestly I never loved that slap of the de-cocker, even though I know they are safe.
