I think that a lot of people don't realize how effective a carbine is for defense. It allows for faster followup shots and its recoil is manageable by those who could not shoot a shotgun.

For many a carbine is the best choice for HD

I keep a pistol close by for HD. I keep a shotgun close by for HD. I keep an AR close by for HD.

I don't believe in bringing a knife to a gunfight, so I see no reason to bring a less capable firearm for the circumstances either.

    Semi-auto rifles for Home Defense

I use my .45 for HD. Thought about using the AR a few times, but even with the soft tip rounds, I fear over-penetration.

    Maybe I am crazy.

Actually a .223 75 Gr TAP will have a lot less penetration than a .45 HP

"As a result of renewed law enforcement interest in the .223 round and in the newer weapons systems developed around it, the FBI recently subjected several various .223 caliber projectiles to 13 different ballistic tests and compared their performance to that of SMG-fired hollow point pistol bullets in 9mm, 10mm, and .40 S&W calibers.

Bottom Line: In every test, with the exception of soft body armor, which none of the SMG fired rounds defeated, the .223 penetrated less on average than any of the pistol bullets. "

    About .223 Penetration
