I imagine most of us here like to keep a ready supply of ammo on hand. I am working to get my .40 supply at a nice level but don't have much shotgun ammo on standby. If anyone stocks 12 gauge ammo, what do you use? This would be good, but bulk type stuff. You know, the stuff you can use to afford to buy a lot of.
Sadly any effective SD 12gauge round I've seen doesn't come cheap. Bird shot can be had at a good price but buck and slugs a up ther is price.
Good size IE: goose and duck load BB or BBB steel shot can be had at reasonable prices. Therye good close range rounds on anything that has a beating heart. Winchester Super X buckshot can be had for ~2.75 a box of 5...which isnt too bad for 10 - 15 00buck pellets.
A half to a case of what you use per shot size is a good amount. Watch for after season sales in stores or mail order merchants.
In some size shot such dove loads get what you will use in a season as soon as you can, before it runs out during the season.

Federal Tactical RR 00 Buckshot can be had for $3.25 / box of 5
Plain Jane Remington Buckshot can be had at wally world for $6 - $7 / box of 15
I keep about 25% Fed Tactical Reduced Recoil 00 and Slugs that I got from Streichers Police Supply and 75% Remington 00 Buckshot that I got in the bulk packs from Wal-Mart. Cheap and easy way to get a good amount of ammo on hand. I would just buy a box of 15 every week until I got what I needed. The remington 00 buck isn't the very best but the price is hard to beat and you can stock up on a lot of it for not that much money...good for a "stockpile" of sorts in my opinion....it's dirty and hard hitting on both ends of the gun :) I find the federal tactical reduced recoil loads much more enjoyable to shoot and are certainly easy to shoot rapidly for me...I'm a pretty small guy and, as such, I can get back on target faster with the RR rounds.
As far as patterning goes, the fed tac rounds group MUCH tighter and more consistantly than the plain janes...their flight control wad is really nice and I'm very impressed with it. Shooting out of a 18" cylinder bbl produces a much tighter pattern than one would expect. It's definately wort it to pattern the two side by side....big difference.
Bulk ammo for something other than defense, you can always go with the bulk 7 1/2 shot that they sell at any of the big sporting goods stores and wal-mart. They go for about $15/100 and, again, aren't great by any means, but if you're trying to get a small stock of ammo going for whatever reason then it's a decent way to get a "larger" quantity of ammo.
sometimes the wally world here has remington buckshot for 2.00 for 5. mostly 00 and single 0 12 gauge.
sometimes they even have #1 and #4 buck in 12 gauge and #3 buck in 20 gauge for the same price.
i've gotten some weird looks when i buy 100 to 200 rounds of each.
Thanks for the replies. Part of my problem I guess is the only bulk boxes I see at places like Wal-mart around here are the 7 1/2 or 8 shot. I'm looking for 00 or 4 for defensive purposes. Ah well, thanks for the ideas.

A while back I got 250rds of #4 buck,super cheap. Can't recall price though.
This stuff shoots great outta my Benelli. I use it for matches.
Would suggest that you buy one box(of 10 rds) and try it out.
I believe that they offer "OO" buck also. --------
Check online...if you look hard enough you can find some good prices on Wolf slugs....
I never saw it before either, but I found out it's not always with the other shotgun ammo...at the walmarts that I've been to it's always been in the case with the pistol ammo :) They can also order it for you if you like. :)Quote:

I second Sellor & Bellot. I have used their 00 and slugs many times and I like them. I know they are cheaper than just about anyone else. Check out http://www.jgsales.com/index.php/amm...ls/cPath/52_53 online and see if they still carry it. I know I ordered it from them in the past.
I found S&B 00 buck for I think $30 for 100 (I think cheaper than dirt, was last summer). I hope I don't ever need more that 100 rounds of Buck. Then I'll pull out the AR, I've got a case (a'hem or 2).
Gander mountain has Federal Vital Shok Slugs for sale for $2.50 per pack. Just a heads up.
