The weird thing is that people would be expected to turn in potentially thousands of dollars of equipment, not to mention leaving expensive ammo, scopes, and any other add-ons basically useless.
Who would show up and hand over expensive assets for zippo? Ummm, no.

They may as well require handing over your car keys.

A common political ploy, especially right now, is called the "Overton Window". A quick google search will give you more info but.....

Other formulations of the process created after Overton's death add the concept of moving the window, such as deliberately promoting ideas even less acceptable than the previous "outer fringe" ideas, with the intention of making the current fringe ideas acceptable by comparison.[5] The "door-in-the-face" technique of persuasion is a similar concept.

The idea is to promote something totally off the wall then political subjects will feel so much better when they only end up with a magazine ban, for example.

This is clearly an "Overton Window" bill. We need to counter with equally stupid pro gun bills and compromise to neutral rather than giving them anything.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

"The gun is the great equalizer... For it is the gun, that allows the meek to repel the monsters; Whom are bigger, stronger and without conscience, prey on those who without one, would surely perish."
