The 5R rifling is asymmetrical in both the number of rifling grooves, and their shape. The theory is that odd number of grooves results in the bullet being squeezed less - any groove is not diametrically opposed in the bore by another groove, but rather by a pair that are spaced apart from each other. The asymmetrical groove shape seems to reduce fouling from bullet material. The 5R is found desirable by the long-range shooting crowd, although not universally so. If most of your shooting is at normal hunting ranges (say, 300 yards or less), I think you'd be hard-pressed to see an advantage to the 5R barrel.

Just get a 700 Varmint in .308 for around 500.00 and spend the rest on a GOOD SCOPE and better Stock.

What do ya want it for? Like others have said: you can go cheaper depending what you want to do with it. If you want to reach out 750+ yards then that is not a bad price. Keep in my mind yo would also be spending a good deal amount of money on glass.

I went with the 700pss detachable mag. It already had a $100 bipod on it and some nice glass! Now I need to work up a load for it! Here's some crappy cell phone pics:

I don't have that specific rifle however I have the version that savage makes 10-fp or something like that? And it is a great rifle. Don't expect the rifle to do the work for you, you still have to understand windage bullet drop and all that good stuff.
