    Romanian AK-47; Advise Needed

Hey everyone. I was in a local store today and they have a beautiful Romanian AK-47 on the shelf that MIGHT follow me home soon. I dont know much about AKs however and dont want to go in blind. They are asking $750 for the rifle with sling, wood stock and hand guard, rail on the side to mount an optic, 2 magazines and a couple hundred rounds of 7.62x39. It sounds like a decent deal but Im not sure. The barrel dosnt have the angled compensator, it looks like it may have been recrowned. Overall, it looks like its brand new. Before I jump on this, what should I know, look for and ask?

I already have an AR and a Mosin so I dont NEED this, I just really want an AK. So far this is the best price I can find and would prefer to buy local for layaway reasons.

    As always, thanks in advance.

Romanian AK's are good rifles. The rifle may have one of many different muzzle brakes so don't worry about that.

This sounds like a reasonable deal, particularly with the spare magazine and ammunition. There are two main types of Romanian ak sporters that I commonly see on the market: the WASR 10, and the SAR-1, although there are a bunch of variations that have been brought in over the years and are too numerous to discuss in detail. The SAR was a Clinton era gun ban model that was brought in from Romania without a bayonet lug or a threaded barrel. If this is your weapon, test the bolt carrier by pulling it back and making sure it does not stick and returns freely. If it does not return freely, you may have a high riding hammer that could cause the bolt carrier to hold back when firing and you may wish to avoid it. Hold the weapon to your shoulder, and make sure that you can get a good cheek weld and line up the sights comfortably. If it looks and feels good, it is worth purchasing. The WASR is a post gun ban model that was imported as a single stack and had the magazine well opened up by Century Arms, and had some of the internal parts removed and replaced by American compliance parts. The WASR lacks the magazine dimples that most ak 's have to hold the magazine in, and instead has metal plates welded into the magazine well. Common issues with the WASR include canted sights and extreme magazine wobble. Line up the sights to look for severe canting. If it is not too bad, they can always be adjusted to compensate, and this is not a deal breaker. Insert a magazine and check to see how much it moves back and forth. If it is very bad you may wish to avoid the purchase, although I have a WASR that wobbles and still shoots one hundred percent. Some WASR ak's do not have threaded barrels, while others do, so yours could be a WASR. Shoulder the weapon, make sure it lines up correctly, dry fire it and make sure that you can get a good sight picture from you shoulder. Check the bolt and bore for rust, which may have happened it corrosive ammunition was fired without a proper cleaning afterwards. If it looks and feels right, it is pretty good deal. I see Romanian ak's going for five to six hundred dollars from different dealers without the extras. I hope this helps. Thank you both! The sight picture looks good so far as I can tell. I have not shot my Mosin yet so Im not very familliar with that style of sights. It feels great in my hands and shoulder and the fit of everything feels great. I didnt dry fire but the bolt felt pretty smooth when I opened and closed it. I didnt think to ask for a magazine (they had them seperate) so I might go back tomorow to check for that wobble. There was no exterior rust but I didnt ask if I can open it up for inspection so that might be on the second visit as well.

If there is excessive wobble with the mag could it just be the magazine or is it usually an issue with the gun itself?

ETA: On a side note one reason I want an AK is WalMart usually has some 7.62 ammo in stock where as 5.56/.223 is just luck and timing. Today my jaw dropped when I saw multiple brands of both calibers in stock. I dont mean two or three boxes but a dozen or more of each brand. Still a 3 box limit though :-(

stay away from any chi-com 47s. Go with this one.

And yes, Tuna Cans of ammo are still out there to be had/cheap for this weapon.

Why? Put it on a cc. You could die next week and then you'd miss out on shooting it. Besides, if you put it on a cc and you die it doesn't count

2 things here. The salesman did tell you correct in that you do need a cc to build credit. I had a low limit put on mine to make me behave. I've already done enough damage with it too on ammo and on-line guns. Just like folks in bars, late at night things look better and computer shopping in the wee hours things look better too and it can get you in to trouble.

The other thing, check out Jeep on consumer report. Yes they look great. We went SUV shopping last week and my folks got one (a GMC)and now their tissed off at snuck in money they didn't see. I have been told (no expert here) that Jeep's are expensive to have repaired. I like VW's but will not get one for the same reason. The good part of the folks new suv is I got their Buick SUV....sweet! It's used, IMO buying used is the way to go. Vehicles depreciate, as do boats. Get something you can afford that is safe and then you'll have money for ammo to go with your new guns!

True on all counts Sister. But my Stratus wouldnt look as cool as a Wrangler if I cut the doors and roof off. Im not sure about Jeeps deprciating much. Im hard pressed to find a used Wrangler that cost less than 12g. But anyways, if I keep my current car I can buy that AK and maybe even that FDE Glock, possibly even the 500 magnum I was also oogling

If the vehicle gets where you need to get and the radio works......get the guns! It seems guns appreciate much faster then vehicles. Just about every vehicle I've had I drive until they drop. Some have almost became classics!

Yes, I miss my '67 SS................................................ ............. but I got top money for it :-)

Also had a very fast Alpha R at one point.......... got good money for that one too!

Now I bump around in a 17 year old pick-em-up truck, and love it!

But I will not give up my '47 Pan or my bagger.......... = loving life!

I guess Im just going through a pre mid life crisiss. lol Does that exist in the late 20's and early 30's? I do make sure my bills are taken care of above anything else but as my ex wife would say, you cant live just to pay bills. True but ironic because she never let me get what I wanted. Now Im single and want to buy what I like before I find someone else to say no to me lol

Its settled. Based on the advise here, Im ganna check out the fit of thoes mags, for rust on the bolt and put the darn thing on layaway. Jeeps are pretty popular and not going anywhere. Im pretty sure there are no threats to ban Jeeps either.
