Giving my Firearm Safety presentation Thursday

This Thursday I'm giving my Firearm Safety CME (continuing medical education) presentation at work. One of the Trauma Doctors is starting off with a brief presentation on firearm injuries and I'm then going into firearm safety.

I've developed a powerpoint presentation that covers the 4 rules, how medical providers may encounter firearms, anatomy of pistols and revolvers, securing firearms, proper holsters and carry methods, in car and in home safes, locks, resources with links to handgunlaw.us, CDC statistics, etc.

There will be several hundred people in attendance. Wish me luck.

I will be using blue guns for demo...and I won't be saying "this is the Glock 40...I'm the only one professional enough in the room to handle the Glock 40."

Great teaching opportunity. I imagine the majority of your audience are anti's. With open minds, they may see that guns are just tools that don't go killing and maiming on their own, and that there are responsible people that take safety seriously.

Good luck with the presentation, and probably with a non-gun friendly (for the most part) crowd.

Absolutely - good luck with the speech. Where you are located attracts people from all over the country, so your audience is probably going to be a mixed bag when it comes to pro or anti gun - but you know that already.

Yes, it is true that often when the word "guns" is mentioned people in the medical profession head for a corner and crawl up in a tiny ball. However, in the part of the country where I live: My eye doctor belongs to our local gun club; My orthopedic surgeon (woman) shoots; My husband's dermatologist stacks his waiting room with current issues of several gun magazines; One of the guys in one of our 3 day gun classes was an emergency room doctor; etc., etc. and so forth.

Now I suppose someone will write and say we are picky and only go to doctors who are pro 2nd amendment. WELL, maybe. I'm not sure I would go for a second appointment to one who was pro gun control, so perhaps there is something to that.
