    Traditional black powder help needed

OK I live in California and they appear to have passed a no lead ban on hunting. I hunt with two rifles a .50 and a.58 using a patch and round lead ball.

Does anybody have any options that would allow me to continue hunting without using lead?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Respectfully,
    Bill

You could try casting your own balls from a different alloy. There again you could ask local muzzle loaders what they'll be loading in their smoke poles? Might could also be a stipulation whereas muzzle loaders are not included in the new ban since they're not considered modern hunting rifles.

Brass makes pretty fair projectiles also.

For that matter, most .50 BMG bullets are made from steel that is copper jacketed.

Copper, brass, steel all of it is used, so a lead ban does not necessarily mean the demise of black powder hunting. It just means that you have a bunch of idiots running the state but you probably already knew that.

Give it a couple of hunting seasons. CA will be overrun with deer, and wild animals. I expect that might change their minds on lead.

    Gold should work okay?

Sorry, just kidding. Good luck, I'm not much of a BP guy, but I'd think there would be a legal metal substitute for the lead

    Depleted uranium?

Sorry, nothing productive to add. Just makes me angry. How can politicians be so dumb?

I just realized: liberal politicians are proof of the existence of God. If natural selection really worked, their DNA would have been weeded out of the gene pool millennia ago. The only logical conclusion is that they were put here by an intelligent force, likely to test us.

So Maxwell it sounds like you're saying God/Higher Power/Yahweh has a sarcastic sense of humor? Is that right?

Why not cast your own Brass Balls?? I'm sure you could come up with some snappy one liners for game wardens you inadvertently come across...

Since you are using "patch & ball" (Flintlock?) you should be able to try different alloys of ball, given that the patch is what grabs the rifling. You will also probably have yo play with patch thickness and powder charge till you get accuracy back. You may also have a change in "stopping power" since there will be a change in the mass of the bullet.

I actually don't know of anyone that has done this, and most folks I know (All F&I and RevWar reenactors) go for the purest lead they can get. (Mine are .45 and .50)
