Ashcroft also supported the AWB though, and yet it disappeared. So did Bush. Yet, here we are. There is a difference between publicly stated support and putting something new into fruition. I doubt very much Republicans will be eager to sell out gun owners and join hands with the Democrats to sell a bill after a) they took the time to spell out an individual rights view of the Justice Dept, and b) the NIH/DOJ study just came out that did not support gun ban assertions.

Not good by any means and I certainly don\'t/didn\'t support the silly ban, but I don\'t think we have much to worry about.

Ain\'t politics fun?? I don\'t think this congress has the stomach to renew the ban, this is just pandering to the anti-gun sympathizers

I look at it in the sense of what Bush\'s DOJ has allowed: the importation of all sorts of surplus firearms, magazines, and the publication of the Ashcroft-requested individual rights memo - not what the pundits say on TV.

It\'s no different than the MMM claiming that you may have a right to a firearm for hunting but really wanting to ban everything.

    This is all about image.

Politics is perception. Not worried too much - couldn\'t run out and buy a HDR right now, anyway!

    Cool New Attorney General

Hopefully, it is all just talk! But then, who knows. So what, his brother is a SWAT member in Houston....God Bless him. That doesn't mean a thing with respect to "law abiding citizens" owning any kind of weapon (bazooka included) they choose. Like the liberal media and the socialistic Democrats, they just can't seem to get it in their head that it's not the gun that's the problem, it's the idiot behind the gun (read that as 'bad guy'). Maybe Gonzales will crack down on the bad guys (and gals).

I could be wrong, as politics can be mighty unpredictable, but I think they'll do everything they can to preserve their support, especially in light of how badly gun control efforts have turned out for Democrats in the past. We all remember I'm sure what happened to the Dems in Congress after the "crime control" (bwhaahaha) bill right? It didn't end well for them. I doubt the GOP will make that mistake.

I broke down and got everything I'd ever really had to have last year. I could have done a couple pools for what it cost, but I'd been kicking myself for not spending money on some things when they were cheap.

Ironically, my best buys were all in the summer before the ban expired as people rushed to dump what they believed would be 'valueless' guns. ;)

Rfurtkamp, if I may ask, what all did you acquire?

To list it all would take a LOT of time - in addition to my database work which is my primary occupation, I worked 30-50 hours a week almost all year at a local gun shop. It got me first crack at some of the stuff that walked in the door.

I picked up, in no particular order, my NIB Norinco Uzi (which with a few US parts still set me back less than a third of an IMI), Daewoo DR-200, two FALs assembled + several I built, my Desert Eagle, Belgian P-35, my night vision scope, a replacement for the 1950s 870 Magnum I foolishly sold in college with cosmoline still in the receiver, a Cetme that works (which satisfied my G3 itch enough), Arisaka with intact mum, and a bunch of other handguns and rifles. All told, several dozen guns went home with me. ;)
