Stupidity should be painful and in this case it was: $29,750 worth of pain.

    So would I.

And probably more than a few would have given $20-30K for it.

Dummy, perhaps. But perhaps it was an unregistered thing, a fully-automatic beast that had so far sidestepped the Fed/ATF requirements. Might have been the only option the person thought was valid, at the time, if coming "clean" the right way was going to end badly and presuming the money wasn't needed. Though, it's hard to imagine someone who'd not find a good use for $20K+. I'd think someone could at least explore the procedures for correcting the record, at worst, so long as it was acquired legitimately and simply fell through the cracks back when.

If the gun was legitimately owned (not stolen), I would hope the owner can get it back.

I wonder if it was found in Grandpa's closet and no one knew what it really was

This person proved he didn't deserve it. It was probably earned by someone who left a legacy to the unworthy.

As ccw9mm said, unless it was registered, it was illegal to own in the first place.

Hopefully it isn't destroyed and instead is donated to a museum someplace.
