Texas: County not allow gun show - wouldn't agree to 100% background checks

Glad to see they "refused" to fold, and will just look for a new venue to have the show. The "laws" cover the background checks by all dealers, private sales.. not required. Why a Texas County pushing this ?

Controversal event ? Really ?? When did a gun show become a "controversial event" in Texas..... ????

Texas gun show loses county venue after refusing background checks

dispute over background checks is preventing a Texas county from hosting a long-running gun show at its Exposition Center.

Travis County commissioners did not renew a lease for the controversial event, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Saxet Gun Shows has hosted a show nearly every month since 2010, but when county officials wanted the company to require background checks for all firearm transactions, Saxet refused.

Weeks of discussions ensued, but both sides could not come to an agreement. Now the show will likely have to find another venue.

The background checks would only have affected about 10 percent of gun show sales. Federally-licensed firearms sellers are already required to implement background checks to ensure buyers are not felons or prohibited from owning a gun.

But, according to the paper, different rules apply to private sales. Travis County officials wanted background checks for those sales when someone wants to sell a gun from a personal collection, as well. Saxet would not comply.

Only one county commissioner, Gerald Daugherty, was willing to propose signing the $114,000 contract with Saxet. But when no other commissioners supported his move, negotiations were at a standstill.

“If you use a public facility to sell guns, we really oughta have background checks done. Or don’t use the facility,” County Judge Sam Biscoe, the chairman of the commissioners, told reporters.

Alice Tripp, lobbyist for the Texas State Rifle Association, called the move “political,” according to the statesman.com.

Saxet Gun Shows owner Todd Beiter told the site that neither state nor federal law requires background checks by private sellers, and “it is not really my job to infringe on anyone’s rights.”

Good for the gun show folks. I imagine the public venue facility needs the gun shows dollars worse than the gun show needs that particular venue.

Some Tx anti politicians just cost that facility that 114.000 dollars this year and every year here after I would bet. Wonder if the commissioners think their little grand stand was worth it when the gun show is being held at some other facility. Good on SAXET

Texas gun friendly rep is getting a bit pounding on in the last few months.

Travis County ... Austin ... influx of libtard mentality, I'd say.

Unfortunately Austin is our little San Fransisco. Add those anti's to our list of people to boot out come election time. I think some of these people drink the kool-aid that's being passed around the nation. It's working else were so they try it here. Our AG said there will be plenty of lawsuits coming.

Something for the people to keep in mind when the County wants to increase rates for services. Ask them why they turned down income and now want to increase taxes.

Sorry, but Austin has as high a proportion of leftist nitwits as most any part of the nation. It takes most of the rest of the whole great state of Texas to tip our political balance in favor of reason. I'd give Austin away if I could.

I'd be happy enough to see folks wearing ones saying Keep Politicians and Judges Constitutional ... but somehow I doubt it'd sell much.

Come on, the university of tejas is there- I don't need any more reason to hate them. The fact that they're complete leftist loons just adds to my disgust for everything Austin.

Though I have had a couple of "Democrat" friends that moved to Austin thinking it would be great to escape to Conservatives in Oklahoma and live around like minded individuals only to learn that they're aren't nearly as liberal as they thought. One moved to west Texas and is currently an elected official with an R after his name. Funny how seeing true liberals can change the minds of people that thought they were on that team.
