Smart Guns: Betting Your Life on Your iPhone? - American Rifleman

This is an excellent article that discusses 'smart' technology and it's proposed application in guns.

"There is nothing wrong with efforts to produce personalized firearms. If firearm owners want such devices, then the market will supply them...The problem is when misguided legislators mandate unproven technology that has not been tested by third parties or even entered production."

For example, suppose the gun has a fingerprint reader or other biometric technology. It sounds great in theory, but what happens when the reader or scanner can't pick up your fingerprint? Many phones and computers currently have fingerprint readers as a form of security. Here's what the manufacturer recommends if you're having trouble with your phone's reader: “For those experiencing Touch ID issues that cause their phone to freeze, or to not work as well over time, restarting the phone or recalibrating the sensor are your best bets.”

How's that gonna fly during a gun fight? Homeowner to home invader: Can ya hold a minute while I restart my gun?"

Maybe after they are mandated and used for at least 10 years by the military and the police then I may possibly consider buying one.

The Antis are all craving about the instant remote kill option, where the Police State can come in and barage jam an area with RF to shut down all the legal firearms owners. Only the criminals with the true illegal firearms will have an edge against the Police. Talk about unintended oucomes of poor political (emotional and not factual) based policy.

I am willing to allow my hearing aid to be controlled by my iPhone, but I would not be comfortable with my gun being so controlled. It works fine for the hearing aid, but the risk of damage to me due to failure of the comm link is minimal. If I need my gun to work, I really, really need it to work, now.

Maybe they can get Microsoft to design it. We know how well their programs work!

Last time we went to a movie my hearing aid battery died. An inconvenience but not quite as inconvenient as my "smart" gun crapping out just when I really need it. Or...I am incapacitated and I need to hand off the gun.
