It claims to show that a bullet will not penetrate a scope and pass through and kill the other shooter in a sniper vs sniper engagement.

    Problems with the test:

    used soft point ammo
were too close to each other so bullet disenegrated.

I knew GySgt Hathcock. White feather would not lie, thus if he said it happened, then it happened.

Thanks for the summary. I love the mythbusters (when I was able to see them) but I think they should speak to a ballistics expert before taking on stuff like this.

Well, they handled the discrepancy very well IMO.

The fact that the bullet would have had to penetrate convex glass without the slightest deflection is what struck me as compelling.

    Hollywood really likes this myth.

Even if the bullet didnt actually penetrate the glass...it would still have enough energy to knock at least some of the scope parts right through your eyeball.

Even if the bullet didnt kill you, but the glass did, what difference would it make?

FWIW,I have no problem believing that a .30 FMJ would go though that scope like a hot knife through butter.

Ive watched it. The scopes were new style scopes.I could not tell what kind of ammo they used. So my question. Did they use ball ammo. But it was a good show. And I know Marines dont lie. So the tale is Plausable.

Did you watch the show? Bullets went into the scope, but nothing at all hit the dummy.

I think they used the wrong types of scopes for the test myself. They used 10x scopes. I think if they had used lower power scopes as would have been used back then, the convex curve on the glass would have been flatter offering a better chance for a straight shot through the tube. The older scopes don't have as much glass in them and the tubes are pretty much straight with no angles inside like the 3 x 9 hunting scopes they tested.

Watched show about an hour ago, all they proved is that they couldn't do it. Maybe if they used the lasers like on the the other test, they could have had a direct hit without the human error.

Well if they had used an old russian scope or chinese of that era they probably would have had a different result. The optics back then used a lower grade of glass, most now either use a form of plastic or hardened glass to avoid the lense from breaking if slammed against something.
