    Darn you, John Browning!

OK, I love the 1911. It's my favorite semi-auto pistol - hands down.

To me personally, it seems JB's genius took a day off when he decided screws and bushings were a great idea for grip retention. For the love of all things holy why not screw the grips directly to the frame? Is there some reason I'm not seeing?

I have replaced crappy factory bushings and screws with nice all steel ones - and while better - they still seem like a weak link to me. If I ever try to change out grips and all 4 screws come right out w/o the bushing backing out as well - I probably wouldn't enjoy it b/c I'd simultaneously be having a stroke out of sheer surprise.

You guys have any tips or tricks? I'm reticent to put locktite on the bushing - but after buying nice ones I just want them to stay in place!

I think he is talking about the stock screw bushing(s) coming out when he removes the stock screws.

The sides of the frame are very thin; I think the thread on the grip bushings is something like 1/4-56. A screw with that fine of a thread would be very easy to cross-thread or strip. The original military grip screws have slots cut to accept the rim of a .45 ACP cartridge to use as a screwdriver.

My Auto Mag has grip attachments that look similar to the 1911, but the "bushings" are cast integral with the frame.

If I was having that problem I'd put blue loctite on the bushing, but I don't have that problem. I know it's common, it just hasn't happened to me.
Nothing wrong with a little loctite. It's not like you have to remove the bushings. Not unless you go to a thin set of grips.

On a side note when you do use the o rings (you can get then at VZGrips.com too) you don't have to tighten the screws in as much and have a lesser chance of over tighyening the grip screws.

I have and I use it sparingly . Just enough to secure, not enough to need an acetone bath

I use the O rings as well. Nice fit and they help secure the grips

I happen to have some of the blue locktite on hand. I'm gonna give it a whirl.

    Thanks for the advice.

The Blue stuff is on mine but just a tad. I don't want to have everything come apart just because I want to take the screws out.

You're using the O-rings between the screw head and the stocks correct, not between the bushing and frame?
