Melonite Finish
Hi All,
I have a sprinfield xd9 service which I took to my local gun dealer to have some new night sights installed. It took over an hour to remove the rear sight, not much problem with the front. the sight was so tight that when he finally did get it off some of the melonite came off in the sight groove. I can almost see the metal under it. My concern is rust, being in florida (humid and salty) is there anything short of sending it back to springfield for repair? some type of cover kit mabey. thanks in advance...........

How old is your XD? Mine was one of the originals made by SA and had the same problems as it wasn't melonite. I called and they paid to have the slide sent back and put an ArmoryKote finish on it.

Melonite & Tennifer Finish
Melonite/Tennifer is a Top Coated finish.
Removing the original rear sight & the new installation probably abraded off a bit of the top coat.
Something that could most likely not be avoided.
It's very doubtful that the underlying Melonite "wore off" since it is a "metal treatment" rather than a surface finish.
It's extremely abrasion resistant as well as rust and corrosion resistant. ~ Melonite being tougher than hard chrome.
If looking at the wear area bothers you then do something about it.
If the appearance of it does not bother you then I sure would leave it alone.
Remember that if you do want to have it redone then you only need to send the slide and that can always go by regular insured mail.
Remember also though that in order to refinish the slide...whoever does that work will likely need to remove your Tritium front and rear sights again & then reinstall them.
Some things are probably best left "as is" unless a little wear spot bothers you visually.
The more somebody screws around with popping your sights off & then back on again the worse off you'll be.
Just my opinion.

I belive it is melonite date is april 06 but I will call springfield, but like I said the sight was so tight it scraped some off looks grey in the area instead of black. It's not a big deal for me I just don't want it to rust.

You should be OK concerning rusting since Melonite AKA Tennifer is "in" the metal surface rather than "on" it.

Maybe some clear nail polish would prevent any moisture problems?
