    USP...drop free magazines?

Just picked up a used USP .40 and noticed that the magazines only drop free when the hammer is down. Dropping a magazine while the slide is locked therefore requires pulling the magazine out. Anybody else have this issue? It appears as though when the hammer is cocked something pushes the main spring into the magazine, keeping it from falling out freely. Is this common? Is there a fix available?

Neverhad this problem with mine. If they are factory mags they should drop free.

I'm guessing that's what my problem is. So THAT is why I got this thing so cheap! Oy... Take a look here:

So what's involved with fixing? Can the strut be bent back, or do I need to replace it? What's a smith gonna charge me for this? Should I return the gun and forget about the whole thing?

Yes and yes. I just put it all back together...feels good to know I can. Since bought it used I had no warranty anyway (and I sure ain't no armorer). It certainly sounds like a bent strut is the smoking gun. My other concern, if you look at the FIRST pic that I posted, there's another piece of metal up there that looks like it took a pounding from the hammer strut...

Bud, I thank you very much for your help. I'm thinking that little metal part isn't critical--probably there to keep the strut from flopping all over the place when the mainspring is removed. But that's just a guess. My brother knows a guy in SWAT that's an amorer for a few different gun mfr's, so I'll see if he can tell me if that part is a problem or not. In the meantime I'll order up a new strut.

    Thanks again Bud!

BTW, yes, it's a full size. Thanks for the link!
