I love a good story. And that's what friends are for. Hell, I wouldn't call anyone a friend that didn't swear to my stories that I tell around the campfire.

Did he do it. More than likely. I have seen people do it and have done things like it myself, but we have hijacked the thread, so to get back to the question asked originally, I don't recommend the 44 mag for long range shooting and for hunting elk. As for Elmer Keith's skills, I will defer to you all.

Based on your guidelines ......... type of animals, distance etc.
    I would suggest the S&W 460.

Remington XP100R. Nice handgun. Also comes in a mid pistol grip from 22-250 to 7 mm.

It's good enough for white tail and hogs. I try to keep my shots at around 50 yards. The 44 mag is very accurate at that range especially from a tree stand.

since you have decide on the 44 do as suggested for the elk and hard cast load fullpower and practice practice i hunted with 44 before going to a 454 and then the 460

Course my 460 load is noting wild a 270 grain bullet going 1000 feet per second

To each there own as long as you become one with the gun and your loading you should be all right

I prefer something bigger and it sure aint from lack of experience shooting or lack of skill

Better get some hearing protection if you use the 454.

Purchased my first S&W 29 in 1984 for deer hunting. Purchased a S&W 629PC in 2004. I have been fortunate enough to had taken deer, bear & boar with them. For deer I typically use Federal 225gr and for bear and boar Federal 300gr cast core. My distances most typically 75yrds and in for deer and boar and 20 yard and in for bear.

In South Florida the deer run real small, so good old .357
    works for me.
As for black bear, protected and smallish also.
