Obviously a newby should start with a smaller rifle and work up, and for a first rifle even the '06 is probably a bit snappy. But if someone can handle a 30-06, they can handle a .338 winchester magnum, now the .338 RUM has quite a bit more recoil than an '06, apples and oranges. Now if I was going to go buy a .30 caliber I would go get the .300 WSM, .300 win mag ballistics with less recoil, and all the bullet selection of the .30's. As for the "big hole" thing, meat damage is caused by hydrostatic shock, as in velocity. I've shot alot of game with both 30-06 and the .338 win mag and I haven't noticed any difference in meat damage, but I tend to shoot heavy bullets.

You might consider a 6.5x55 swede. Great ballistics, low recoil, super accurate. Easy to reload with a wide rande of bulletts 88gr to 160gr.

I would go with a Browning BLR lever action rifle in 308 Winchester. It is light a capable of taking any game in the USA.
Have Fun and Shoot Straight !!
