Browning was an incredible designer. IMHO: Browning firearms stood the test of time. Folks complained about the weight of the "Superposed" shotgun. The receiver and barrel hinge areas were machined with the purpose of leaving extra metal in critical areas. This was not for increased strength. Should a person actually wear out the receiver, in the critical areas, the extra metal was there to provide a, skilled gunsmith, metal to build up these areas without welding or machining. The smith would "peen" the extra metal over to the wear areas.
Good stuff by Brigid ("Muffins and Mausers" gal)! Check out her recipes, too.
