Residents React To Shooting In A Moncks Corner Neighborhood
Location: Moncks Corner, SC

Moncks Corner, SC - A sleepy Moncks Corner neighborhood startled and surprised by the gunfire that unfolded there Sunday afternoon. Neighbors say the biggest problem they've ever encountered on Horseshoe Road was speeders.
From speeding cars to speeding bullets, neighbors on Horseshoe Road got more than they bargained for on Sunday...with gunfire breaking out between Moncks Corner Police and a suspect - who neighbor and mother of two, Jean Dangerfield, says also lived on Horseshoe Road.
"This is a family neighborhood and then you get people that are not family and you don't know nothing about them. And it just goes to show you need to know more about who's in your neighborhood," say Dangerfield.
A neighborhood Rhonda Hayes and her family chose to live in because they thought it was safe.
"People come away from the city to come and live in peace, you know? But evidently that's changing now...It's just unbelievable...Where does it stop?"
A question 12-year-old Hailey Wasielewski, and her classmates at Berkeley Middle, will likely be asking over the next few days as Lonnie Wells, the officer who was killed, was their school's resource officer.
"Everybody knew him around here. He was nice...a person that you could talk to," says Wasielewski.
Hayes' family says Wells loved kids and helping the community.
The suspect was also killed.

Moncks Corner Police Officer Killed
Sunday, Mar 25, 2007 - 10:51 PM
A trip to a Moncks Corner laundry mat ended in a double fatal shooting Sunday afternoon. One police officer and the suspected shooter were killed
A witness to the dispute called 911. Police then used a license plate number to track down people involved in the dispute to a home on horseshoe road. When two officers went to check on the people inside they were met with gunfire.
More than five agencies responded to the call of two downed officers. Officer Lonnie Wells was killed. The other, who News 2 only knows as Officer Styles, was seriously injured.
Berekeley County's Deputy Corner said, "you knew both officers? I knew them personally. Fine officers."
But the bloodshed didn't end there. The shooter stole one of the police officer's cruisers and a chase ensued.
That chase ended on Highway 17A and Heatly Street where authorities say more gunfire broke out. The suspected shooter was killed.
"The suspect is dead. I don't know if wounds are self-inflicted or from the police shooting. I don't know," Salisbury said.
It's a domestic dispute that claimed the life of Officer Lonnie Wells.
"The family is devestated. I had to notify Mrs. Wells. Just imagine when someone tells you your husband has been shot in the line of duty," Salisbury said.
It's a call officers know could come any day.
"It doesn't get any easier. I can assure you that."
At last check, Officer Styles was in critical condition. No word yet on funeral preparations for Officer Wells.

Very bad news, over such stupidity.
If you stand up and be counted, from time to time you may get yourself knocked down. But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good. ~ Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

Our world seems to be filled with people who place no value on human life...
Condolences to the officer's family...

We lived in Ladson SC, and we traveled to Moncks Corner quite a bit.
Sad to hear what happened to these officers. May God bless them and their families.
