Police: 70-Year-Old Man Injured At Gun Range
    Ammo Goes Off, Wounding Man

    UPDATED: 12:00 pm EDT April 5, 2007

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. -- Police are investigating an injury at a gun range.

Broward County Sheriff's office said a 70-year-old man was wounded when a box of ammunition, that was possibly defective, went off and wounded the man.

The man was transported to Florida Medical Center and police said the man's injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident happened at 4325 N. state Road 7, which is listed as Guns & Knives/Arizona Shooting Range.

That's a new one on me & I sure would like to see that video on YouTube.

My box of ammunition "went off" all by itself...I swear it!

    He probably NDed into it.

Gee...I just LOVE all of that available information given on that link.

If that incident happened to Anna Nicole Smith's ex-boyfriend shooting at that range we would know absolutely everything about that box of ammunition.

I wonder if the follow up story will involve something like this:

"Witness's report that the man had an awl and a hammer and was hitting something just prior to the ammo going off"...

    or

"The man was just trying to warm up the ammo with a blow torch when it went off for no reason at all"....

    LOL

Sounds pretty fishy to me. I've never seen a single round of ammo Just "go off" let alone a whole box. I've seen rounds cook off, I've seen hangfires detonate after being manually ejected. But I've never seen one go off for no reason.

I'd be interested to see a box of ammo fire all by itself....especially considering I wouldn't think a single round would even if cooked in a fire. Sure the powder might burn and maybe push the round a few inches...but there's nothing containing pressure around the shell casing???

Hmmm been to that place.... Not your typical crappy store.
I am sure I'll get some info through the usual suspects and I'll update.

I had a box of ammo "go off" once. To do it we had to wrap the box with detonating cord along with a quarter pound of plastic explosive. Was quite impressive.

When I was little I threw ammunition into the fireplace. It detonated, but didn't really go anywhere.

    Seriously

I am just really curious as all "get out" as to what exactly happened there.

Honestly I don't even know how I could recreate that self~exploding ammo scenario with a box of factory centerfire ammunition.

Dropping a cinder block on a box of .22 rimfire sure might do it.

I am trying to think of ways that a box of ammunition could be "defective" to the degree that it would self~detonate - at a gun range.
I am stumped on this one.

Maybe it's not the guns that are evil and suddenly just "go off" killing innocent people all these years. It's the ammo! With an evil intent they work their way into innocent, unknowing firearms and wait for the opportunity to suddenly go off harming the unsuspecting. We need to ban such evil and unsafe ammunition!

Hey, I could be a news reporter!!!

But seriously, I would sure like to hear the real skinny on this. Something is just not adding up here. I've heard of plenty of strange things in life but self detonating boxes of ammo is a new one.
