Your Thoughts on How to Stop the Gun Lobby

    http://www.freedomstatesalliance.com/?p=101

The Freedom States Alliance asked for your ideas on what can be done to stop the plague of gun violence in America and to rein in the gun lobby’s radical agenda. Here’s what you told us.

First, thank you for taking the time to send us your suggestions and insights, we sincerely appreciate your feedback.

As you will see below, the ideas submitted covered a broad range of solutions, everything from passing stronger gun laws to changing our gun culture. Some of the responses were irreverent, some were thoughtful, but all of them called for solutions, in one form or another, to America’s gun violence epidemic.

We could only post a fraction of the overwhelming responses we received, and we listed the submissions by first name only. We also had to edit some of the responses due to length. We hope this begins a dialogue as we work towards solutions to America’s gun violence problem.

Please take the time to read what Americans had to say about gun violence and their ideas on how to stop it. This dialogue is a tribute to democracy and the exchange of ideas and solutions.

    Sincerely,

    Freedom States Alliance

How to Stop the Gun Lobby’s Radical Agenda:

The NRA operates by imposing fear, intimidation, and ridicule on those who disagree with them. Stopping the NRA will require unmasking their tactics through peaceful demonstrations. When enough people march peacefully, picketing NRA headquarters, handgun manufacturers, and compliant politicians, public perception may change.
    -Timothy

We let the gun lobby determine the debate. A massive public relations campaign that gets average citizens demanding that government get guns away from children and criminals would change the discussion. When everyone is demanding a solution, organizations can begin to provide the specifics of what works.
    -Sally

I believe in the total ban of all guns no matter what kind they are.
    -Joseph

Make and publish on the Net and in newspapers an ongoing list of who in Congress is getting money from the NRA and how much, along with their voting record on gun control issues. Additionally, publish the identities of gun manufacturers who support the NRA and their lobbyists.
    -Toni

Push your state and the federal government to enact public funding of campaigns, requirements that donations by private groups are split between all recognized candidates, and requiring that the cable and broadcast companies donate air time. If the NRA cannot buy a politician with campaign contributions, the politician is more likely to respond to the voters.
    -Lane

One way to start to turn the tide on the gun lobby will be to tell the stories of the victims of gun violence. We need to show people who have lost loved ones to assault weapons, unlicensed weapons, guns bought from criminal gun dealers who have had
    violations but still sell guns.
    -Eric

As a social scientist, I think what’s needed is more and better data. One of the NRA arguments is that people need guns for “protection.” What’s the evidence that this ever works? If you have a gun on your person or in your car how are you safer in a dark parking lot late at night? How many intruders or muggers are scared off or shot by the self-sufficient gun-toting citizen? How many people are accidentally shot every year by guns kept by someone for “protection”? Data, data, data.
    -Colleen

Rewrite the Second Amendment. It is time to discuss repeal or modification of the Second Amendment. It’s not the word of God.
    -Jan

In this country, movies with sex scenes showing full nudity are rated “X”, whereas ones where people get their heads blown off rarely if ever get an “R” rating, let alone an “X”. In countries such as Denmark, it’s the other way around. Guess which country has far less violent crime and almost NO murders.
    -Bill

The NRA should be banned as a terrorist organization. They have contributed to more deaths in the United States than any other terrorist group.
    -Charlie

Reframe their arguments in the way taught by Professor Lakoff of the Rockridge Institute. Compile lists of their arguments with a list of SHORT rebuttals. We must win the war for public opinion and counter arguments of gun enthusiasts. We don’t want to outlaw guns. Just install some common sense laws. We must get this message across with how many kids are killed by guns
    -James

On Putting Stronger Gun Laws in Place:

Ban the sale of handguns in our cities. Restore the assault weapons ban. Let’s get serious and stop mollycoddling the sinister NRA.
    -Lewis

Pass strict and binding laws that forbid handguns to be sold. Make prison sentences longer and harder for anyone using any kind of gun at any time or place. Educate, educate, educate the public about the danger of guns period!
    -Rebecca

Our country needs a mandated NATIONAL gun policy comprising universal background checks for ALL firearms transfers, safe storage requirements, and strong anti-gun trafficking and anti-straw purchase laws. Then there must be the political will and available resources to back these mandates. Further, gun and gun crime trace data must be liberally shared between all law enforcement agencies.
    -Brent

Close loopholes on sale of guns at gun shows. Require licensing of all weapons. Require safety training on how to use handguns. New laws against ownership/sale of assault weapons; clips holding more than 10 rounds; purchase of no more than 1 handgun every 3 months; waiting period of 5 days before getting handgun; in-depth background check on purchasers of handguns. Enforcement of existing laws pertaining to handguns.
    -Bob

An Inside Look at How the NRA Works:

I used to work for a fund raising firm that had the NRA as one of its top clients and the techniques used to raise money from current members as well as recruiting new members were criminal to say the least. I can’t tell you how many on the list of NRA members were unhappy because they got called every month for money with scare tactics. I think the NRA lies about the number of members that they have.

While I appreciate the fact that everyone is allowed, and should, have their own opinion. It is sad to see how many people blame the object. An gun is only a tool to be used. If the person using it is good then the tool is used for good. If the person is evil then evil things happen. Taking away guns will not change people, those responsible for actions. Crime can, has and will be committed by people with knives, baseball bats and sharp sticks. Countries like England, Australia and others around the world that have banned or restricted guns don't have less crime than we do. (Though it is always funny to read the stats put out on how much gun crime is reduced. Even if that is true, total crime goes up.)

We have become a nation of people that won't accept responsibility or place blame where it is due.

Wink Your Thoughts on How to Stop the Gun Lobby

Well, one thing we don't have to worry about is them stopping the gun lobby by shooting anybody.

My suggestion to them would be just to continue to WHINE everybody to death and block all major thoroughfares with huge flocks of sheep. That should draw some attention to their cause.

We have to remember that the Anti Gun lobby will lie to achieve their goals. One thing we must not do is being too polite and call them on the spot. It work wonderfully when Broward County Sheriff Jenne tried to pass a fully automatic AK as one of the weapons that were going to be allowed on the streets at the sunset of the AWB. The CNN correspondant & Talking Head got all upset, but CNN was forced to make a correction and they lost credibility.

    So that's where they went!

I have been wondering for some time what happened to all those "hippies" from the 1960's who wanted to "give peace a chance". I thought they might have all died by now from drug overdoses, but I see that some have survived and joined the anti gun movement.

When I consider how these folks plan to defend themselves, I recall the words of King Arthur to the Black Knight, "What are you gonna do, bleed on me?"

True Miggy - and it will continue thus. Ergo - there is no way to stop them (other than to to have a law against lies!).

Best we can do is try and spread the word of logic where and when we can.

Let's ask this same group how to cure cancer. Might be fun to read their "logic" there, too.

Nothing agitates an agitator more than a calm demeanor.

The older I get the calmer I become. Not because I am trying to become silent on an issue, but because I enjoy watching others get themselves wound up and get worn out.

A calm facade plays well with a lot of the people that I have encountered in the last few years. I have been the rabid gun supporter in the past, and found that the effectivness of getting someone to see another side of the issue that they are so against. I have seen on more than one occasion someone who was blindly anti, not necessarilly change their mind, but, change their outlook on the subject. After several months, I actually wound up selling one of them a revolver. They came in to my store completely against owning one to being a pretty decent shot with it.

It is true that calmer heads prevail.

That reminds me of a Monty Python skit called "How To Do It."

    It went something like this:

"Tonight on How To Do It, we'll tell you how to rid the world of all known diseases.

First, become a doctor, and invent a marvelous cure for something. Then, when the medical world sits up and takes notice of you, you can bloody well tell them what to do, so there won't be diseases any more!"

That's about how rational those morons are.

Like someone else said, "I threw up a little when I read that."

The funny thing is, whenever the anti-gunners "rebut" a claim by a pro-gunner, they LIE to do it. Why bother compiling a list of short rebuttals. Just say whatever you feel like, no matter how unfounded or false! That's the anti-gun way!

Oh, and this guy says they don't want to ban guns, but, um, like half a dozen others, at least, said they want just that! They don't even agree with each other!

Most of those responses are so far out there, so detached from reality, that they are fully indicative of where the mindset of the American left is right now. They're bizarrely irrational.

If I were an anti this is what I would do: I would quit complaining about firearms. Let those who own firearms get back to "white" (which won't happen after the AWB of 1994) and when gun owners are at their most apathetic. Vote for RINO's and after they mess up so badly run all the anti's you can find
