I couldn't really follow the conversation on that board.

It doesn't surprise me at all if a service member doesn't know the difference between different M-16/ AR-15 models or terminology. Not all of us are gun nuts. Most of them probably can't tell the difference between an M40 and M42 gas mask.

The A3 upper on an M-16 is the same as the A2 upper. The M16A3 is full auto instead of burst. The M16A4 fires in bursts, but has a flattop upper.

M4s with few exceptions that I've seen are flattop. The M4A1 is full auto.

I was always taught (and read) that the A2 upper has no detachable carry handle, A3 is a flat top.

Very true. After all...how many military personnel refer to any AK as an "AK-47" despite most of the stamped semi-auto AKs on the market are based on the AKM.

I would agree that just because one is in the military that doesn't mean he or she is very versed on weapons. I have met a few Marines that know a lot about weapons and I have met a few that didn't hardly know what caliber their gun fired.

You are absolutely correct. The only guys I served with that seemed to know their **** were the hunters. The rest focused on what they were issued and could care less after that.

With an AR yes; with an M16/M4, no.

The M16A3 does have a removable handle.

    b. The M16A2/A3 rifle (Figure 2-4) features several improvements over the M16A1. It is designed to fire either semiautomatic or a three-round burst through the use of a selector lever (SAFE, SEMI, and BURST). The M16A3 has the same characteristics as the M16A2 with the exception of the selector lever (SAFE, SEMI and AUTO) this weapon fires full automatic.

    So, these folks are incorrect?

The M-16A3 is identical to the M-16A2 but has a removable carrying handle that is mounted on a Picatinny Rail (for better mounting of optics) and is without burst control. The M-16A4 is identical to the M-16A2 except for the removable carrying handle and Picatinny Rail.
    http://www.army.mil/fact_files_site/m16/index.html

Those include: M16A3and M16A4 rifles, with "flat top" receivers, that had a Picatinny accessory rails in the place of the integral carrying handle. The rail can be used to mount detachable carrying handle with iron rear sights, or various sighting devices (Night/IR, optics etc). The M16A4 otherwise is similar to M16A2, while M16A3 has a full-auto capability instead of the 3-rounds burst.

    Affirmative.

Link 1: official Army source with incorrect information. I will contact them so they can make the corrections (We make mistakes sometimes too)

Link 2: I don't know their excuse, might have something to do with Colt labeling the weapon before it was adopted by the military.
