Does anyone have a home range?

I have recently applied for the permits to build a pistol range on my property.

It is going to be underground, using a storage container as the shell.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if you can give me any tips.

My neighbor is in HVAC and did all the dust collecting/ac/venting for some of the ranges in the big city so I have that all taken care of, just looking for suggestions and tips.

With a permit and if legally allowed Go For It!

Most folks will need to check your City, Borough, Town, Local laws.
Most all prohibit the dishcarge of any firearm within their boundarys or limits.
That would include inside your own home no matter if in the basement or not.

I live in east bum egypt :)

Plus I am working with county zoning ( to ensure I am legal) and the NRA to ensure that the range is compliant. The NRA has some really good guidelines regarding backstops, air flow rates, sound abatement, and other misc. criteria pertaining to indoor ranges.

Currently I just go 2 miles into the desert from my house but I am lazy and the summers are hot and I want to be able to go shooting in my boxers or go shooting at night or go shooting when it is one hundred and oh my god out and have AC :)

I like my rifles but I shoot my handguns much more.

Well yea in the back yard. No restrictions out in the country...

We used to have one on campus in one of the old Dorms that was under the basement. It was used by ROTC and before that when we were a Military College. Basicaly a concrete basement with Sand piled high in the back end of it. I had to dispose of all that Sand littered with lead as hazardous waste. Keep that in mind.

My backstop will be an angled structure with a catch. I am going all out I have 50K cash to spend on this project. Biggest issues are going to be ventilation and cleaning the powder from the floors.

Well if you can recycle the lead easily enough its a product not a waste. So its a very valuable product at that.

Ive got a bench out in the yard. I shoot from 100 yards out into my pond bank that is about 4 feet high and 6 feet thick.

I live 2.5 miles from a private range - 100 meter pistol/rifle w covered pad. Archery range, sporting clays, the works.....at $90/yr it MUCH cheaper than building one (though the thought HAS crossed my mind)....

I also built my own range on 40 acres we bought. I cut into the side of a hill to make the backstop and established the top of my dam as the firing line for my 200 meter range. I had the 30x30 meter area graved to make my pistol range, so practicing movement and finding brass isnít a problem.

I use 2/3rds IDPA targets from Arntzen made from AR500 for pistol and rifle targets along with IDPA silhouettes in stands I had welded up. I made a table with the help of a friend of mine using synthetic decking boards for the top. We also made a couple 4x4í target stands out of steel for zeroing/testing loads, they also double as barricades/walls when we practice IDPA stuff.

I also built the Horst bench and dug it into the ground, but I used synthetic decking boards for the top and seats.

View from the 200 meter bench.

Itís definitely a work in progress. Next Iím going to put in a graveled prone firing point next to the 200 meter bench, then a 300meter position. In addition Iím always looking for new targets and a stand for our bowling pins.

OK, where are the moderators when we need them? I demand this thread to be deleted? Am I the only one crying his eyes out and green with envy? This is worse torture than Gitmo!
