Handgun resale value: fired or unfired matter?

    Hi everybody!

I'm hoping there's truly 'no such thing as a stupid question', but I'm gonna put myself out there and ask anyway. Is a handgun more valuable as resale if it's NIB and has never been fired, or does it's resale value drop once a shell has been fired?

My dad owns a beatiful stainless S&W 3" .357 wheelgun (can't remember the model number! ) and refuses to shoot it afraid that it'll affect it's value.

Can anybody perhaps give me advice as how I can talk him into letting ME shoot it?

I bought the .38 /357 ammo for him and has even offered to clean it for him, but no dice.

    Thanks, all!
It's not about the caliber you carry, it's about how you USE it.

Yup, what Bud said. Unless its some rare jem, shoot it. FWIW, cleaning it just might do more damage than shooting it as will leaving it dirty.

No such thing as a stupid question. Great post--I just learned something, too, so thank you for asking it.

    I'd have to disagree.
I would say unfired will get more cash than fired. I realize they're fired at the factory, but if you leave the tags on it i would be willing to bet you'll get more than if you removed them and shot a box of rounds. In most people's minds it becomes used when you shoot it, but can still be new in box even though it has a previous owner.

Try it somewhere or check blue book if it is a rare sure but a normal production gun it don't matter .. Even the dealers will tell you that when buying for their personal collection they try to buy used in good shape as they know it devalues
