Colt Mustang Pocketlite .380 magazine releases after first round

The last two times I went to the range with my Mustang Pocketlite, the magazine would release whenever I would squeeze off a round. I made sure I was not pushing in the release button. The magazine is extended so I just put my little finger under it to hold it in place. My original factory mags were at home since I carry it with the ext mag. Any ideas as to what may be causing this and how to correct it? TIA for your help. SS

The mag catch is either worn or you have defective mags.

The mag tension of a fully load mag will keep the mag in place untill one round is fired, the mag tension decreases, and the mag drops free.

Remove the mag catch and inspect the ledge that holds the mag in place.

Standby and I'll get pictures off of my Mustang.

You can see the little ledge on the right side, I'm willing to bet it's worn down a little on yours.

Also, if it's not mag tension, it just might be the recoil kicking the mag loose.

If it is your mag catch, go to Brownells and do a search, they have most parts for Colt .380s

Mag or mag catch could be worn , best to check em both.

How is the tension the mag release? I would check your spring also, they have been known to break and or weaken.

Thanks for your replies. Everything I checked seems fine. We are away on vacation right now but before we left, I loaded it with one of the factory mags. I am going to try to find a shooting range tomorrow and put some rounds through it and see how it does with the factory mag. If not, I'll check it later this week when we get home. Thanks again for you help.

I had a similar problem on an old FN Browning P35. I had to file the magazine where the mag catch, caught, or actually didn't catch.
For whatever reason all the aftermarket mags I tried needed to be relieved 3/32" or so to engage the magazine catch. The original mag with the gun had this done and by comparing the old and new I was able to figure out the problem. Sloppy 1943-44 +/- machine work?

    Mr. Shooter -

I had a similar problem with my Pocketlite. I found that I squeezed the grip a bit harder than normal on firing (like flinching). It was enough that my thumb just pressed the magazine release.

I solved it by replacing the factory grips with some Pachmyers. The Pachmyers were slightly thicker than the factory grips. Just enough to keep my thumb off the button.

YMMV one hell of a lot.

Went to the range this morning......

and my Mustang 380 performed flawlessly with 50 rounds through it using the factory mag. I believe the extended mag I was using when the release ocurred was faulty. Thanks for your input.

Sounds like problem solved. It was a mag issue.
I will support gun control when you can guarantee all guns are removed from this planet. That includes military and law enforcement. When you can accomplish that, then I will be the last person to lay down my gun. Then I will carry the weapon that replaces the gun.
