Can my Rossi M 59 Pump action .22 magnum shoot LR?

I have always purchased .22mag for this gun but I was recently informed that it would most likely shoot .22LR as well. I can't find ANYTHING on the internet that says this is true.

I was about to make my first trip to wally world cc-ing and I was gonna pick up some .22LR if I can shoot it. I have been paying $10 for 100 rounds all these years for .22mag when I could have been paying $10 for 500 rounds of .22LR

Anyone know for sure if my gun can handle .22LR? I would hate to buy $10 worth of useless ammo.

(I did find out that I could get ~$300 for this gun though. )

Some of the older guns had the barrel stamped w/ 22 short. LR. & mag. Perhaps first read what the barrel says on your gun.

    Exclamation .22 Magnum ONLY

DO NOT shoot anything but .22 magnums. The .22 long rifle case would most likely rupture(due to difference in case diameters)and leak burning powder and gas.

Can you explain this? This doesn't make sense to me.

.22 mag is slightly larger in diameter than LR. While it will fire LR, it isn't a good idea, and the cases will usually split. Saw someone get smacked in the face with one that bounced back because of the much lower velocity.
    Don't do it.
If you want cheaper ammo, .22LRs aren't that much. Most pump/lever/bolt action .22LRs can use .22 short, long, or LR, but not magnum.

    Cool Explaination

kavity; The .22 long rifle cartridge has an old style "heel" bullet. The base of the bullet is a smaller diameter than the top.The lower heel portion is seated in the cartridge casing, the larger diameter top part that is visible, extends out flush with the outside of the casing. The .22 magnum bullet diameter is the same, but it is not flush with the outside of its case. The .22 mag bullet has a straight tapered base with no smaller heel section like that of the .22 long rifle. The case diameter of the magnum therefore being larger. I hope this gives you a better understanding.
