Mother Loading Gun Shoots Son
A nine-year-old Rockdale County boy remains hospitalized at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston after authorities say he was shot in the stomach as his mother was trying to load a gun.
Sheriff Jeff Wigington says authorities believe the shooting of Johnny Andrews early Saturday was an accident. But he says authorities have questions about why people would have been using a gun at 1 a.m. in the morning when children were present.
His mother, Carey Fitts, faces a charge of reckless conduct, a misdemeanor.
The sheriff's department says it appears the woman's boyfriend was showing her how to use a .45-caliber gun when two shots were fired, one hitting her son in the stomach.
Authorities say it appears the 30-year-old woman was pulling the slide back to load the weapon and her finger must have been on the trigger.
Two other children, ages four and ten months, were in the Brandon Glen apartment at the time.
The sheriff says the boy was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Aside from the obvious problems with this - how about this line?
But he says authorities have questions about why people would have been using a gun at
1 a.m. in the morning when children were present.
As opposed to 1 a.m. in the afternoon? How do these people get paid to write? And where would the children be at that time, if not in the home? Sigh...a firearms tragedy of incompetence compounded by a journalistic tragedy of incompetence.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Someone wasn't emphasizing the 4 rules. This is precisely why the rules exist, and why they must all be used.

At least they got this part right:
Authorities say it appears the 30-year-old woman was pulling the slide back to load the weapon and her finger must have been on the
trigger.

They also got this right too:

I bet she feels bad about it. The guy is more to blame than the mother I suspect.

Dang - this crap is so, so avoidable. I am really frustrated by folk's inability to properly expedite the simple rules of gun safety - heck, it is not that hard or shouldn't be.
As I say so often - rule #2 - rule #2 ... that at very least avoids bullets hitting folks.
Hate it when kids get hurt - for any reason.

HTF did two shots go off on ACCIDENT! One round going off on accident maybe, but have to pull the trigger TWICE on a SEMI-AUTO to get it to go off TWICE!

OMG I was about to post about that and then I saw you'd beaten me to it! I'm all about correcting that kind of thing: I work as a proofreader, and have moonlighted as a copy editor. That kind of redundancy is a no-no.
I recently read a story in the local paper about a run-down house in a neighborhood; the reporter wrote that the twin brothers who own the house are "disinterested" in keeping it clean.
(Disinterested means unbiased; UNinterested would've meant they don't care)

Well, one can only hope she learned something. Misused firearms are deadly, in the wrong hands, or in untrained hands. Next stop: to find a knowledgeable instructor who can take her through the paces at the range, if for no other reason that to help her avoid killing her own children.

I will say the only good thing is that this Child is at Egleston which I found, when I was working as a Youth Pastor in ATL, to be a great hospital and great staff.
