How would you spend $1000 on ammo?

We get a fair few threads where you are invited to hypothetically spend someone else's money on a gun, the 'what would you get from this list?' type threads, we also get threads regularly asking 'how much ammo do you have?'.

Well I thought of a twist, nothing new there I have a twisted mind.

What ammo would you buy if you had $1000 to spend, free and clear - just for ammo?

Let's leave reloading out of this one, just store/internet bought ammo.

    What calibers?
Would you buy something that you perceive a future supply problem with, or just lots of your favorite FMJ?

Here you go, I'm giving you an imaginary check for a grand - go get some ammo and tell us what you bought.

My money is split between a 1000 rounds of 5.7x28 (for shooting and the brass) which will run about $500, and the rest on .45 in as many different types of FMJ as I can find, probably looking at 1000 rounds there too.

I would buy defensive ammo in 9mm, 357mag and .380acp. I would buy alot of 12ga slugs and 00 and the rest 7.62x51mm FMJ

Hmm. Most likely I would dump it all into rifle ammo. 75% 223, 15% 7.62x39 10% .308. That tends to go the quickest, and is the most important to get a fair amount on hand.

Well if I was buying $1000 in ammo at one time I would have to think I'm stock piling for a SHTF situation. Therefore rifiles come first since I want my enemy far, far away from me. My 2 riles are a AK and a SKS so two thirds of the money goes to a 7.62 x 39 round. The remaining funds will be split uo between .380, 9 and 45's.

That sounds close to my thinking ... altho maybe I'd cut the .223 by 20% and use that 20% for SD ammo for carry.

Well...I could go with a lot of steel case...
    2,000 5.45x39 $240
    2,000 5.56x45 $400
    2,500 9mm $360

...or I could get something special like
    500 5.56 Horniday TAP $600
    1,000 9mm Federal HST $400

Hevi Shot or Remington HD 10 Ga goose shells. At over $4.00 a shell it wouldn't be too many.

Definitely have to start off with .22lr! I figure about $20 for that. Can never have too much of that around. $80 on .357 magnum. $150 each on 9mm and .45acp. $100 on 12 ga $300 on .223 and $200 on .308

The majority (60-70%) of the money would go to .40 and .45.
The rest would be split up between .22 and 12guage. Maybe 25% for .22 and the rest into the 12 varying from 00Buck to some lighter bird loads.

How would I spend $1000 on ammo? Quickly.

One caliber of rifle ammo, probably 5.56N. If I'm dropping a grand in one shot, it will be for as much of one type of ammo as I can get, hoping to maximize my bulk discount/economy of scale. Heck, that might be the push I need to break down and buy that 6.8SPC upper I've been thinking about for so long - now I'd have something to shoot through it!
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

I wonder how much .22LR you could get for a "G"

    My calibers are pretty simple.

    50/50 .45 / 5.56

The .45 would be mixed JHP, FMJ, and some SWC.

Haven't check WW prices on a brick of Fed ... the box of 550 ... but make it easy at $10 a go ....... that'd be 55,000 rounds.

Now, if we make adjustment for a possible qty discount ..... and go back to something more like the old price of .... let's say round figure $8 ....... then we'd have 68,750 rounds

That should cover a few range grin sessions nicely
