Feeney, 21, of Philadelphia, said she was too frightened to move as the animal tore off her poncho and sweat shirt, clawed at her back and bit her head, and wondered, "When will it stop?"

"At one point," she said Monday, "the bear lay down beside me."

Feeney was camping on the eastern edge of Hickory Run State Park with two friends Saturday when she returned to camp and found the bear in a tent, and ran back to the others with the bear chasing her.

When the bear dragged Feeney into the woods, one of her companions said he shouted, "Play dead, Kathleen."

Feeney said the bear tore at her clothes, bit her, covered her with brush and tree branches, and eventually left. She said she could hear her friend yelling, "Run to my voice."

Feeney was treated for scratch marks on her back, bites on the back of her head and a puncture wound on her leg. She was discharged Sunday. Park officials said it was the first attack by a bear in Hickory Run's history.

March 2004 ~ Three shots ~ The animal died.

Child Upgraded To Fair Following Gorilla Attack
NBC 5 Reports Animal Shot Dead

    POSTED: 6:18 pm CST March 18, 2004
    UPDATED: 4:20 pm CST March 19, 2004

DALLAS -- A child was critically injured when Jabari, a lowland plains gorilla, escaped from his habitat at the Dallas Zoo Thursday afternoon.

Rivers Herd, 3, was upgraded from critical condition to fair on Friday morning. The boy's mother, Keisha Herd, 26, was also in the hospital with minor injuries. Both were bitten and scratched by Jabari.

Rivers' father updated NBC's Matt Lauer on their son's status. "He has a chest tube in right now, from where the gorilla bit him on the side," Rivers' father said. "He also has a couple lacerations near his eyes. He's doing really well. He's talking to us. He asked for something to drink. He was talking to my mother. He told her that the gorilla tried to eat his head. He's doing a lot better than we would have expected."

Also injured was 39-year-old Sheryl Reichert who was thrown against a wall by the gorilla as she was trying to protect her child. Dallas Deputy Police Chief Daniel Garcia said the victims were bitten and scratched.

Officials said a 350-pound male gorilla went on a rampage after escaping about 5 p.m. The zoo was evacuated and police were notified.

When the animal charged two of the department's tactical officers around 5:30 p.m., getting within 15 feet of them, the officers fired three shots, Garcia said. The animal died.

Anybody know THREE SHOTS of what? Somebody from Dallas remember this story?

Don't recall what the gorilla was shot with, but I do remember that initial reports seemed to lay out a story of LEO's getting that "once in a lifetime safari" opportunity....just shot the heck outta the gorilla, who they later say was being antagonized by juveniles....duh! I don't think they had to kill him. The gorilla did the typical charge and stop routine (they don't talk ya know). The LEOs obviously couldn't interpret the signs and just blasted away.

Nobody has done squat to prevent kids/juveniles/whatever from teasing the "zoo residents". Unfortunately someone innocently trying to enjoy the zoo got hurt because of them and the zoo needlessly lost an attraction.

    350-pound male gorilla

That's actually not even a mature male.
It's a sad fact that once any animal attacks a human then that animal is instant history.
Even if it's just following its own instinctive behavior.

Yeah, but once an animal gets it into its head that it CAN attack humans, then no human is safe around them. Personally, I would have liked it better if the mom had whipped out her trusty shootin' iron and shot the gorilla herself.

Even if it's just following its own instinctive behavior.
    So were those cops.

Sorry, I don't get the whole "feel sorry for the animal because it was just doing what comes naturally" bit. If they were friendly, lovable animals, they wouldn't be in cages.

Other side of the coin tho ebd - if they weren't held captive so folks could make a buck displaying them - they'd hopefully be in the wild, where ''being loveable'' ain't necessary!.

Yep...captivity is an unnatural environment for wild beasts. Some readily can adapt to a good "zoo" type situation and some animals can never quite make the transition. The ones that cannot will always be unpredictable.

This is true for animals at the zoo and criminals in civilized society. It's also why I'm always armed.
