milsurp 30.06 ammo safety
folks, is it safe to shoot military surplus ammo (like the ones sold in CMP) in modern rifles like the Mossberg ATR and/or 4x4 or savage in 30.06? If I do use this ammo, is there something I have to watch out for in terms of safety? thanks in advance.

Should be perfectly safe. There may be problems with misfires (not likely) or corrosive powder or primers (I don't think so with CMP ammo) but no real danger in firing.
The problem comes when you fire modern loads through old guns.

I've heard the same thing about the corrosive powder and primers, it can really eat away at the gun. I think as long as you clean it thoroughly after each use, you should be ok.

If it happens to be corrosive primed - make sure to dissolve the salts with water based cleaner first and dry off - before 'normal'' cleaning.
You probably know that anyways but - for sure, if chlorates etc are ''trapped'' under a film of oil, damage can still occur to the bore.

I always swab the barrel 2 or 3 times with a clean patch soaked with Windex. The water and soap in the Windex cleans the salts and the ammonia helps clear the copper fouling.

Military ball .30-06 is a moderate to light loading, compared to modern commercial .30-06. There's no danger in firing the stuff through any bolt gun; the danger comes when you put modern hot loads through an M1 Garand, which has potential to bend the op rod after continuous use.
