    If you want a purely utilitarian gun then buy the Ruger. It is a well known fact that Bill Ruger built his firearms, especially his pistols to withstand any load you threw into them; The only problem is I don't know of many gunsmiths that are able to do a trigger job on a ruger, whereas a smith can be made to shoot like a dream.....

    Buy the S&W and shoot the hooey out of it. It'll take it and come back for more. The lock work will wear in rather than wear out. If you think the trigger is good on a new one just think how it will feel after a year or ten of steady use. No action job required either.
