    Hey OD;

    Thanks for sharing the interesting letter on from Springfield Research Service on your rifle. It does the speaking for your rifle for a portion of its history. It points towards possible Spanish American War usage. Or pehaps manning a garrison while other soldiers were sent off to fight.
    I've never seen an example of the Springfield Research letter.

    Springfield Research Service is quite something, IF they have anything on your weapon. They sent copies of Fitzsimmons military records, discharge paper, medical records etc. Money well spent.

    My oldest functioning one is a German Luger that was built in 1914 and used in both World Wars. It even has a Nazi Swastika that was stamped on the barrel during a refit before WW2.

    I also have a double barrel 16ga shotgun with the old Damascus steel barrel that was owned by my great grandfather. It was made sometime in the late 1800s. I don't haven't looked at it in years and it is probably not safe to shoot.

    I have two oldies but goodies. The first is, I believe, a Russian military contract Berdan rifle. Barrel is stamped 1883. The other one I have no clue what it is, but it is old! I don't know how visible it is but there is a fair amount of detail work engraved into the stock, and I am pretty sure that it is real gold laid into the engraving on the top of the barrel.

    Here is a .351 Winchester Carbine Patent date 1910. Still a good shooter, but ammo is hard to find.

    I've got a German K98 manufactured in 1938, thats the oldest I own (I should get off my lazy butt and take pictures of all my new weapons too, maybe I will today), thats the oldest I personally own.

    In my family there is a Colt 1903 Hammerless semi-auto pistol in .32ACP that belonged to my great-grandfather. It was manufactured in 1924, and he was know for bootlegging, so I bet it could tell some stories.

    I don't have to honor of really owning an old relic. The oldest one I have is a 1989 Beretta Cheetah in LNIB condition.

    Now, if I play my cards right with my girlfriend's Dad, I just might be a lucky owner of a WWI German Luger.

    Maybe Collector's Firearms in Houston will able to identify the second piece you have there. Just trying to help.

    GREAT THREAD!! I really love seeing those old Colt's and Winchester's! This is the oldest one I have. It was my grandfather's gun and from what my dad used to say, he was a great shot with any weapon. It always rekindles many fond memories. I still take it out and bust the hell out of clays with it
