Help me identify this wheel gun

My father has had this gun for some time and I never really looked at it close. Look at the marking stamped on the left side... kinda looks like the Colt horse but then there seems to be something strange with it. I have compared it to the Colt Python 6" .357 but can't seem to find a model that is exactly the same. The gun is very well built and shoots very well. Is it a Colt Python or some kind of strange knock-off?

Looks like a 6" Colt Trooper with a Pacmeyer grip.

Does it say "Trooper" on the barrel ?

Doesn't say anything at all on the barrel which has contributed to of course to the mystery.

Cant see the horse too well in the picture. Does it have a large mane on it ? The Colt Horse has a small mane. There should be two wires showing that the horse is entangled in.

    edit:
I just looked at my 3 Colts. The screw just above the trigger is in the wrong place...the Colt screw is more forward of the trigger.

Also the grip contour is not quite the same as the Colts is a bit more streamlined.

I'd be willing to bet that it is a Spanish copy. Some of them had suprisingly good quality to them and shot rather well.

It has what I would call a defined mane but not large. I tried to get a better picture of the horse but without putting white coloring in the stamp it is difficult.

I blew up the "Colt" trademark and looked at it and compared it to a real one.

The right front leg of the Colt is draped over the wire which runs nearly parallell with the ground. The top wire is more at about a 15 degree angle and the nose of the Colt is over that wire.

    Does yours look close ?

Also the hammer profile, although close, is not quite the same.

Yeah, something about that trademark just doesn't look like what I can find on the internet on other guns. Are there Colt knock-offs out there?

The ejector rod housing is shorter on a Trooper. The closest thing I can find is a King Cobra but the front sights are different on them. You may very well have a counterfeit on your hands, especially since there is no model branding on the barrel.

You can write Colt and send the serial # to Colt and see if it is one of thiers.

I think I will do just that. My Dad wants to sell the gun and he needs to know what it is so he doesn't misrepresent himself.

You really can't tell a great deal from the style of pony, there has been well over 50 different Rampant Colt designs used.

Maybe a colt trooper from what I have seen in the net.

If you write Colt pay the $35 bucks for a letter of authencity it will help increase the value.

It's been awhile since the letters have been $35.
