    Run while you can Illinois

I found this article on the Illinois State Police website.
    http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearms.cfm

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1968, Illinois enacted legislation to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public by providing a system of identifying persons who are not qualified to acquire or possess firearms and firearm ammunition within the State of Illinois. The Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) Act established a practical and workable system to identify persons prohibited by Section 24-3.1 of the "Criminal Code of 1961" as amended, from acquiring or possessing firearms and firearm ammunition. The Illinois State Police was given the responsibility of administering the Act.

There are approximately 1.2 million valid FOID card holders. Approximately 210,000-220,000 applications are processed annually by the Firearms Services Bureau. In 2002, 4,642 applications were denied and 6,926 FOID cards were revoked as a result of the extensive review process which identifies individuals whom are prohibited from possessing or acquiring firearms and firearm ammunition.

All Illinois residents who buy or possess firearms are required by law to have a valid FOID card. FOID applications can be obtained from any firearm's dealer, law enforcement agency, or printed from the Internet. To obtain a FOID card, complete an application and forward it along with a $5.00 fee and a photograph to the Illinois State Police.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a few issues with this. Does anyone see this as wrong? I probably don't even have to ask that Since when does the state have the right to deny a citizen a right? I think its bad enough as is just to be registered in the state system for owning firearms... let alone having to tote around your "papers" for firearm ownership, which can be revoked, leaving you defenseless at the state's discretion. Anyone from IL care to weigh in on this?

Wait until you have a national ID card.
All this data and more will be stored on it.
All your info will be in a database for easy tracking.

In the next 5-10 years, as facial recognition software becomes more commonplace - it will be known to whomever is running the cameras who you are and a host of data will be on file to cross reference.
Privacy is in its last days.

Can we say Big Brother? I do not like the fact that the government knows that I own guns, and could potentially discriminate against me because of it... or worse yet seek me out because of it. I think the states need to step up here and say "No we wont have anything to do with your national ID card" It makes me sick to my stomach

Actually, that brings up a very interesting perspective on what the Second Amendment actually allows.

For example, we know the words. But what exactly does "the right to keep and bear arms" mean? It means federal and state governments can pass any legislation it wants provided it doesn't infringe upon the right to keep and bear arms, yes?

Can criminals still keep and bear arms? Can the mentally ill? Can states dictate a specific way arms must be kept and born? Can federal or state governments require training ("well disciplined"), firearms and otherwise, if it doesn't prevent the actual ability to keep and bear arms? Following that line of thought, would it not then be unconstitutional to require advance training to have access to a RIGHT?

Illinois screwing 11,500 people out of a Constitutionally-protected RIGHT seems like a successful federal lawsuit waiting to happen. Just need a citizen with the money and a lawyer with the stones to do it.

    Interesting article. Thanks for posting.

    Cool

....the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, provided they have a valid FOID, shall not be infringed.

From Shelby County Tennessee, if would cut over an hour and a half off our drive time to visit my parents in Middle-Western Indiana. But, we take the long way to get there, I-40 to Nashville to I-65 up to Indianapolis then I-70 to my home town. We don't have to disarm at all and my Glock and my wife's XD stay on our hips the entire trip.

We do not even drive across Illinois.

I don't support businesses or states that would try to deny me and my family our right to self-defense.

I feel the same way about Maryland. I have personally boycotted Maryland. I avoid Maryland at any cost. The only times I go to MD are to drive to WV or VA or to go to visit my parents in Charles County. Otherwise I'll drive an hour north to Harrisburg to avoid a 20 minute trip to MD.

I live in central Illinois and that is OLD news. The hacks out of Crook County... er Cook County and Chicago got that law rammed through and into place many years ago. Ever since then, we've been trying to get it declared unconstitutional and/or removed from the books. The morons from Chicago are forever looting the state treasury to get more money for their troubled and bankrupt city. Trouble is that Chicago is turning into one BIG refuse dump with white flight so bad you can hear the stampede at the south end of the state. Our present governor is "a Daley man" who spends most of his time in Chicago instead of in the state capitol of Springfield. Every time the runt governor moves, it costs us $5K in security fees and transportation. Downstate Illinois is just about ready to revolt, build a wall around Cook County and put machinegun nests and razor wire on top of the wall. If we can't put a wall around it, maybe we can give it to Chavez the area's favorite socialist leader. Any way, one day soon I'll be out of Illinois for good headed to a pro-gun/pro-democracy state.

My thinking entirely - and I do my level best to follow it. Sad tho on reflection as it will stop me ever visiting some places I would otherwise love to see.

Amen brother - I never go to the PRI for anything anymore. They're not getting any of my money for gas, lodging, or anything.
