    1911 Questions

OK, this one is for all of you 1911 enthusiasts out there. A friend of mine recently asked me what I thought would be the best mass produced 1911 he could buy. From among the large manufacturers i.e. Kimber, Springfield Armory, Colt, S&W, Sig, Para, etc. As I only have experience with the Taurus PT1911 that I own, I couldn't really offer any advice. He was looking for all of the typical features: Extended beavertail grip safety, 20-30lpi checkering on the front and backstrap, lowered and flared ejection port, etc. On a related note I am thinking of splurging on a good custom 1911. I've pretty much narrowed it down to: Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, Les Baer, STI, or Nighthawk. Any thoughts?

There's a lot of good choices listed up there, I'm partial to Les Baers, Springfields, and Colts in that order.

Lima loves her Wilson, but I'm not overly crazy about them, they are a little more expensive than a Baer but I don't see getting much more for the money.
The Nighthawks are super nice, but again, way to much money for what you're getting.

I have no experience with Browns.

For the options he wants, I'd have to go with a Springfield TRP or Colt Special Combat (no checkering)....or a Kimber CDP or TLE, for your firend I'd go with the Springer as it is one of the only "mass produced" models with those options and no firing pin safety.

I'm guessing that we're talking 5" guns right? Does he want a steel frame or an alloy frame? Rail or no rail?

You pretty much narrowed down what I was going to suggest. These are all excellent guns. For what your friends requirements are, he is looking for a custom also.

What type of price range is he looking at? This is going to be the biggie when making a recommendation.

I carry a Springfield 1911 A1 Mil Spec. from time to time and have had no problems with it.

I like my Baer - but I think all those custom makers turn out nice 1911s. They are all in a different style and have different prices - let that help with the decision.

    My vote for Kimber

After years of shooting Glocks (one of which I still have - G26) I decide to visit the "dark side" and try a 1911.

I tried several other manufacturers before buying the Kimber "Warrior" a full-size 1911 w/rail/

300 rounds no problems. Smooth/light trigger and very accurate.

Some people cringe at Kimber because of the perceived price. But they are only $100-$200 more than their next lower priced competitors. I personally think the price difference is a bargain for what you get in quality.

But opinions about 1911's are like belly buttons: everyone has one; they're all different.

i personally have a kimber and love it as well.
have shot many of the others and didnt like them as much,
so i would say kimber and SA tied. then i donno

I ended up recommending the Springfield Armory Loaded for my buddy. As for me, well...the search for a good custom will be a long one. 2K is no joke.

The S&W PD is a good gun for the money. Mine has been 100% reliable thus far.

Take a look at the Dan Wesson line (I carry a Bobtail Commander). Very high quality priced lower than others mentioned.

I have a loaded SA SS Champion and really like it. My gun was flawless right out the box and has eaten every brand of ammo so far 3000+.
