So I have an Elite 229 in .40cal coming with a barsto barrel, was reading the Sig forum and found what I can gather is:
The Barsto barrel might need a bit of fitting to my gun, but should work fine with the .40cal slide.
226 mags fit the 229 but stick out, not sure if 226 9mm mags will work in the 229 .40cal slide with the 9mm barrel?
Anyone own a 229 that they swap barrels on to confirm or deny the above?
I own a 229 in .40 as well and am interested in responses.

Yes, I use the .40/.357 Sig mags no problem with 9mm rounds. Because the .40 casing is obviously bigger than the 9mm casing, there is a problem when you load more than 10 rounds into the magazine. I can fit 12 rounds of 9mm into each mag, but have found this to be fairly unreliable. It is a double stack mag and with 11 or 12 rounds in the mag, the 9mm rounds tend to jam in the magazine itself.
In the instruction manual, you will see a disclaimer saying not to use 9mm rounds in .40 magazines, but I haven't had a problem when loading only 10 rounds of 9mm in the mag.

I have a 9mm drop-in, semi-fitted, Barsto barrel for my P229/.40--and have used my .40S&W mags. When using the 9mm barrel, I've had to use a liberal amount of gun oil to keep the barrel from overheating, expanding and locking up the pistol.
While this is fun to shoot at the range, IMHO, I would not use this configuration for self-defense for two reasons:
- I haven't shot my P229 enough as a 9mm to know if the gun is going to seize, much less, when it might seize
- I prefer .40 over 9mm
I own 229's and I've read numerous times that the 357/40 mag will feed 9mm, just not 100%. Fine for the range, not for defense.
The dealer who to be fair just got the barrels in from Barsto, realized it will need fitting, as the work (barrel is oversized) is beyond what he can do, I will get mine fitted by a gunsmith here when it arrives. Rather have it done right than push someone to do a half job that might not work well.
Yes, it needs to be fit. Yes, the mags will work... most of the time. The follower is a bit different.
