Angry Bah... its articles like this

I read this article today, and its no wonder people are Can anyone else catch what is wrong with this paragraph?

Later they found that the young man had an AK-47 automatic weapon, kept at the home of his stepfather. He had two magazines, with 30 rounds each, that "had the capacity to fire multiple rounds in a short period of time."

Is this hard to understand? Then why does it get unintelligible to some people when 5 little words are changed?

It's the usual ''hype things up to the max" ........... they'll make a semi sound as if it's full auto.

There is a near obligatory media disease of blowing up all negative aspects of guns --- as if suddenly all good folks who might have a gun are out and out evil.

One nut job in 300,000,000 -------- what's that ... that's 3.333333333 ^-9% - so, punish the rest of the populace huh.

OK let's say just gun owners - what is it? 90,000,000? Say that is it - so now we have 1.11111111^-8 ........ who haven't today let rip in a public place. Punish all the good folks with slurs and hype - hardly just and fair. (OK plenty of bad guys out there too - but let that ownership figure be legal people)

I thought the basis for a full-auto rifle was that it was capable of firing multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger, not the repeated number of rounds expelled in any given amount of time. Hm...be careful you knife is not too sharp, it could kill multiple people between shapenings creating the new FULL-AUTO-ASSAULT-KNIFE. I wonder how many people a large truck can kill between fill-ups?...must be what they refer to when they say assault vehicle. For that matter, they better shut down all fast food joints....anyone up for an assault burger?

I guess I didn't realize that magazines could fire multiple rounds in a short period of time. None of my magazines can fire ammo...

"with 30 rounds each, that 'had the capacity to fire multiple rounds in a short period of time.'"

And a nuclear weapon could wipe-out the whole town, but those who legally "possess" them wouldn't use them that way.

I was pointing out the "Automatic" bit. P95 got it. Last I checked automatic weapons were well controlled, and unless you have serious connections it's near impossible to get one. This guy certainly didn't fit the role of some mobster. The media uses the word automatic to play on the fear of that some nut job went into this mall and sprayed a volly of bullets into a crowd just like that, when it's not the case.

Wayne LaPierre took on CNN in a similar situation...

well, that's not exactly true. Anyone can buy a machine gun, they just all come from a fixed supply (post '86), and therefore have exorbitantly large prices. There's also the CLEO sign-off (which can be worked around by opening a trust), and all the paper-work and the hassle that goes with that. All in all, though, you certainly don't have to be a mobster to legally buy a machine gun, or even particular well connected.

I see your point, and I agree completely, though. The definition of "automatic weapons" is being used to lump semi-auto and full-auto weapons into the same catagory. This same scare tactic has been around forever.

I don't think the average person really cares to differentiate...whether semi- or full-, 2 seconds or 2 minutes, it says automatic and that is what will be focussed on regardless.

I also believe there are lots and lots of full autos...and not well controlled.

The thing is that they left of the very importnant prefix of "semi"...

Capable of firing multiple rounds in a short period of time? No a cap and ball revolver can accomplish the same thing, so can a two shot Derringer.

They just like to imply that the firearm in question is some big bad mythical monster, and totally overlook the fact that the descriptions they give can match the most mundane firearms available.

Capable of firing multiple rounds in a short period of time.

Show me a firearm that isn't capable of that, and second, what do they consider a short period of time?

Statements like this are geared to the ignorrant, the major problem with this is that the ignorrant don't know that they are ignorrant, and they believe every statement the biased media will spew at them.

The media relishes in the fact that thier target audience doesn't know jack about firearms, that's why the leave off the prefix.

There's been a few conversations with folks that just don't know that what the media refers to as "automatic" is just a regular semi-auto rifle. They actually believe that these kids are somehow getting full-auto firearms.

Once you actually educate them on what is out there, and what is required to get a class III firearm (after the relatively huge sum of $$ for a payment of course), well I've actaully seena few get upset at the media for "making" them believe something that isn't true.

JD, I agree with your thoughts but also really believe the average working person, the mother (a huge voting block), and youth (another huge voting block) don't care to know. I don't believe there are many women that own assault type weapons. The medias target audience...you guessed it...women and youth.

    Just more national media hype

Saying itís an ďautoĒ gets more attention that saying itís a semi-auto.

Kind of tired of the national media trying to control our lives.

Wait and see, next week the national media will fine some way to blame Bush.

All my guns are single shots...until I pull the trigger again. Stupid media.

On a side note - why would the place need to be a crime scene for 2 days? The cops aren't going to catch anybody....he's dead. What kind of evidence are they going to find? Bloody smears, bullet holes... the guy shot a bunch of people then himself. The only one that committed a crime is dead so... get a broom and a mop. JMO
