Online petitions don't do squat. Votes count. Action counts.

I agree, that's why I keep my political critters' addresses in Outlook and save my letters so I can keep mailing them. I usually fax, email, and snail mail so they get three contacts. M y wife also sends letters.

    MODS,

I have used this site for other creating petitions before. It is not a scam in any why. Yes there is some advertising on the site that is targeted at the petition content, but this is a free service and that is how they are making their money.

It's been over a year since I started using this site and I haven't gotten any junk mail from them, nor have I heard of anyone else getting SPAM after they signed a petition.

    Just an FYI for you.

Do your homework, learn about the details and contact your representative, act locally, raise awareness
and when a responsible person like yourself writes your representative/politician, you just include the link to the petition in the e/mail

Long way to get to 1 million signatures. If you have one million signatures out of the estimated (mine) 180-200 million Americans of voting age, that isn't enough to pursuade any bill. It is estimated that there are 80 million gun owners in America. Those are the ones we need.

Besides, all my reps are Democrats. It isn't even worth my time contacting them, but I do anyway.

My concern is not how many "signatures" we get. Just a couple more massacres by boys-in-black using their step dad's assault rifles and you can kiss it all goodbye. The public is finicky and they will, in cooperation with the media, will look for any quick fix.

I signed this petition 6 months ago. It's been on the Internet since 22 February, and in that time, it's only gathered 40,000-some signatures? Like Tubby said, a long way from a million, which is probably an unrealistic goal.

It's a feel-good thing, it gives us all a chance to voice our opinions, but it won't make one whit of difference on whether a new AWB is passed or not.

I don't think this bill is going to go anwhere. Here is the current status of the bill in congress. It appears that is just sitting and almost dead like similar bills of this nature in the past two congresses.

I did sign, and am currently drafting letters to my reps (and Senators too, they're going to count should it make it out of the House.)

It's kind of nefarious. Of all laws, I hate reading bills, but I plugged on through. I read the bill, and although it says "REINSTATEMENT FOR 10 YEARS OF REPEALED CRIMINAL PROVISIONS RELATING TO ASSAULT WEAPONS AND LARGE CAPACITY AMMUNITION FEEDING DEVICES."....there is no provision actually within the enacted law which provides for a sunset.

Write your legislators. They're the ones who matter.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code
