    Dri-Rod in safe

Interested to see if anyone has used a Dri-Rod or something like it in their safe. If you're unfamiliar, this is a warming rod to help circulate air and prevent moisture from building up on firearms.

I know this was made for that purpose, but I keep ammunition in my safe and I'm a little uncomfortable with this.

Any long term good or bad experiences?

    Thanks.

Yep, keep one in there. It really does help keep rust off the metal. The one I use barely heats up at all, hardly feels warm to the touch; just enough to circulate the air a little. Ammo is not going to be a problem.

I guess I should have clarified: under normal conditions, I'm not worried. If it shorted out or overheated, then I could see a problem. Guess I'm looking for someone to say they've had a bad experience, or hope to hear someone that's had one of these for years.

    Thanks.

I've kept my guns in a vault since 1983 with out a Dri-rod. I keep them oiled and they are seperate from each other. I've never had a gun rust in my vaults. As long as you use an air conditioner in your house and don't have wide variations in temperature in your house I don't think you should have a problem. If your worried about ammo going off because of a Dri-rod, I've never heard of it.

I've got a can of silica gel at work that is gonna go in the trash. No need to use electricity, (I guess to regenerate, because you have to heat it to drive out the absorbed moisture) and it's free to me. The dry rod sounds interesting...do you know how many watts it is? Maybe just put a 25 or 40 watt light bulb in the safe...???

I live on an island in Florida, and I’ve keep a golden rod in my gun safe for over 10 years. In the time, I’ve never had any rust problem. Well worth the money.

I use one. I don't really know if it helps. But can't hurt. Nothing beats a cleaning rotation.
