Thumbs up For all you penny pinchers here

    Guys, and Ladies
I was posting this to another thread, but I thought it could take on a new life and discussion on it's own. I just wanted to share a secret with you
While at a Friend's Gun Shop, I noticed that he was woreking on a slightly rusty Buled S&W model 15 2 inch revolver. I watched him pull out a penny (yes a penny) and proceed to work on the surface rust around the trigger guard, cylinder and top strap. I asked him what the heck he was doing, to which he replied "I'm taking off this rust, haven't you ever done this"
Now, me as a former dealer, have never known about this little secret, BUT to my amazment, the rust DISSAPEARED, and the original bule remained on the gun WITHOUT a scratch!! He then took some 0000 steel wool and VERY gently worked the blue to it's original finish, with the aid of some hoppes #9 mixed with break free.
I don't think it matters whether it's copper or a regular penny, but I'd try the copper first. Just for you "Penny Pinchers" to get your "penny's worth"

Well heck Bump, I'm positive all of us never intend for our weapons to develop any rust, through body sweat, or otherwise
It was intended to help develop a better understanding of what we can do to get small amounts of that stuff off sight areas, slide stops, etc etc.
Not to mention that "deal" you may find, and bring the finish back to a gun, that others may shy away from.

    You're entirely correct Bud !
I saw this guy use the 0000 on the trigger guard, barrel, never in the tight areas

    Brownell's

    Brownell's sells bronze wool.
    Bronze is mostly copper.
It costs more than a few pennies though.
I know that ordinary steel wool can sometimes make a real mess when finishing or refinishing lighter colored woods or gun stocks.
If you "steel wool" the wood prior to finishing & then use a water (or water and alcohol) based stain or a water based Acrylic finish then the tiny embedded steel wool particles rust in the wood grain & they "rust spot" the wood. It looks terrible.

And just as a side note to all you pretty pistol poodles,

Some local AZ guys from GlockTalk got together this past Sunday to help out one of the female GT members who was having some issues with a couple gang wannabee members that lived across the street..its a long story...I can post the threads if wanted..anyway..it was some security cameras and floodlights, some low voltage lighting and a whole lotta landscaping. Anyway...point to the story...I was out there from 5:00 am til a little after 3pm...working, sweating profusely, etc. My Glock 30 was soaked in sweat and by the time I got home it had dried and crusted...not a spec of rust. Nope not one..it wiped right off..so I may not have a soul..but I got no rust either! :) Man...wheres the love...LOL

I'm no gang expert but I recognize a Latin Kings tag anywhere. I've seen too many of them stenciled on notebooks. computer monitors, lockers...

Brad - thx for the link and yeah - A LOT to read but - it was compelling reading, and I did not skip all that much.

I can hardly find words to truly describe what you guys did and accomplished. ''Community Spirit'' perhaps scratches the surface but it goes to show that on these boards we frequent there are some damn fine people.

That has to be one of THE board threads in a long time.
