    "It's unloaded"...sure.

The Four Rules are there for a reason, violating three is not good.

Man Shoots Cousin By Accident Trying To Clear Gun
    DANIA BEACH
    (CBS4) ―

A man is recovering on Saturday after he is accidentally shot in a Dania Beach store's shooting range., said Keyla Concepcion of BSO.

Police said two cousins were at the Bass Pro Shops shooting range located at 200 Gulfstream Way in Dania Beach. One man tried to clear a 45-pistol and it inadvertently shot him in the left leg.

Ross Rossiter had just walked into the store when the incident happened.

"He went to hand to him the gun and he says yes it's unloaded he asked him again, is it unloaded yes he goes let me show you when he went to unload it is when he shot his friend," said Rossiter.

The victim was taken to Hollywood Memorial hospital and is expected to make a full recovery
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

This is the reason I do not like to go to public ranges,
and when I do I wear my body armor!

The gun inadvertently shot him... now how did that happen? Unloading a weapon through the muzzle is not good.

    Idiots and guns

The newspaper account is confusing, but it sounds like the one holding the gun violated at least some of the basic rules of gun handling:

    1. Keep muzzle pointed in safe direction, even on "empty" guns.

    2. Keep finger off trigger unless you are on target and ready to fire.

    3. Don't take somebody else's word that the gun is empty - check it for yourself.

I agree with the poster who said that public shooting ranges attract a fair number of people who don't know these rules.

I've seen better reporting in a freshman English class!

That guy at the range needs a 'come to Jesus' lesson! He's extremely lucky he didn't kill his cousin or someone else!

This is why the military has a procedure for transferring firearms in a non combat situation.

First person clears the weapon and uses the slide lock/bolt lock. Visually confirms it.

Second person takes the firearm, visually inspects it, sometimes sticks in a finger for further confirmation, and closes the slide/bolt on an empty chamber.

    Precisely!
Always hand a gun to someone with the slide locked open and butt first.

This last week at Fort Sill a 19 year old Pvt was killed when a group were training on a 50 cal machine gun with unloaded ammo. He was shot in the guts. Some how a loaded round got into the box of unloaded ammo and they were not paying attention to there the muzzle was pointing. We will probably see some heads roll for that accident and some bird Col. will not make General. The Pvt that pulled the trigger didn't get in trouble because he had not been taught any better. A very sad situation and needless death.

I don't know why that story affected me so much but it really hit home. Such a needless waste of a young man trying to serve his country. I think part of the blame is our big city society. A lot of kids today grow up not knowing the difference between loaded ammo and dummy ammo. Or muzzle control for that matter.

"Heads will roll..." You can take that to the bank. Starting with the Colonel. Pity the NCOIC that was in charge of the ammo.

Bummer! But why even ask? We all should know rule number one...

    1. ALL guns are always loaded!
    ALWAYS carry! - NEVER tell!

judgement to keep himself out of situations that would require a display of his
    superior skills."
