Heh, heh, I already figured I was all washed up, just needed a little validation. I'm surprised that as many polled for the old style as is showing right now (6).

My SP1's serial number is in the 28,000 range which puts it either in 1972 or 1974. I can't remember which and don't have a reference with me. It appears to be all original and sports the cage type flash hider. Anyone know when the cage type replaced the open type in service? In civilian models?

I suppose the triangular style will suffice for my use of the rifle. It sees casual use in local high-power matches, bench rest use with various handloads, and recreational shooting out on the old home place.

Hey Amigo Erich! Hope y'all had a great Christmas. We did. Watch for some ratty photos of Dave and Jessie and Jessie's great Triplelock on Pro Gun Forum this weekend when I have access to my home computer.

The most sensible thing I read in this post is the part about carrying the rifle for long periods. I can appreciate stiffness and soreness at my age.

Cool, Bryan - I'll look for the pics.

I really like the M4 for carry - it just doesn't weigh much at all.
Shot-placement is king. Adequate penetration is queen. Everything else is angels dancing on the heads of pins.

I prefer railed handguards, i prefer them over either the plain round ones, or triangular. Just because as another poster said the Marines issue so much stuff to hang off it, and it is now what I am used to.

I love the vertical foregrip too, although it takes a bit of tweaking to find where your sweet spot with it is on a weapon.
